Thanks for the responses, it's as i expected ! Ray, with regard to your comments, is that true? The vehicle is registered, buts a 1981 combi van, now not in production . Its impossible to buy aftermarket products like the speedo your refering to.Its classed for insurance purposes etc as a classic vehicle, would the same still apply . Goochie i'd be interested to know if your friend was also in trouble for not having a speedo at all.
Thanks again Treacle

I know lots of you out there work for various police forces and would appreciate some assistance . As well as the scooby i drive an imported lh drive vw combi van . As such its fitted with a km only speedo . Not that speeding is a real issue (bits fall off at 65 mph) but where would i stand legally if pulled over for doing 38 in a 30 for example . Would i be able to argue that the speed should be posted in km ph as in the rest of europe? etc . I know this is probably cut and dry eg caught speeding, my fault, not the road sign, but i'd like to hear your feedback, especially with all this euro laws being applied in other areas e.g taken to court for selling bananas in pounds .
P.S not been caught speeding by the way, just curious

A friend of ours was caught for speeding in a Steam Lorry - 36 in a 30. It has no speedo at all but he could'nt get off, I think they told him that he was responsible for keeping to the limit - by what ever means.

Road signs were exempt from having to go metric because of the cost implications i would guess. Same old story, one rule for the government and another for the rest of us.

if you have registered the ca rin the UK and it does not have MPH inside the KM on the speedo then its illegal anyway so you would get done twice!

Nope. The steam lorry was manufactured in about 1920 so never had a speedo.

Did you know you can get done for speeding on a push bike? (theoretically)

LOL when I was a kid I used to race my mates down a large hill on our bikes. We coul easily hit 45mph. And it was a 30mph limit

I wonder how the Police could prosecute a minor for speeding on a pushbike?

Same way they do murderers. Tell them that they're very naughty, don't do it again and let them off.

It's only the really nasty people that do 80 on the motorway that need taking off the streets.

Thanks for the offer muppet paster . I'll drop you an e-mail when i get the time and money to replace it . I'm sure you're aware that there are always more urgent repairs with vehicles of this age that seem to soak up any spare cash like holes in the body and leaky windows etc.
