Question

Is there a psychological explanation for why I enjoy putting myself in situations where I know the only outcome will be messy and unpleasant (and no,I'm not just talking sexually!)?

Any armchair Freud's care to comment?

I think low self esteem makes me crave the attention.

Sad I know.

Any suggestions for improving self confidence?

I suffer from this a little as well. I tend to always think the glass is half empty! It just seems like everyone else around me is achieving/moving forward/getting lucky/etc and I just can't seem to get out my current 'life rut'. If you find the answer let me know

Dont know about anyone else but when I was a kid and I got a new toy I always felt the need to see if I could 'nearly' break it. I was devastated at anything I did actually break but still felt the need to do it over and over again when I got something new.

Weird or what?

Saxo boy has hit the nail on the head.

I work my **** off, don't lead a extravagant lifestyle yet due to debt I have nothing to show for my efforts.

My peers have houses, nice cars and are settling down and I don't feel much different to 5 years ago.

I think my impending birthday has caused me to start sorting through some of my issues!

Prozac? Hmmmm, that can't change years of self hate though can it? Rose tinted specs for as long as you take the pills?

Exclamation

People who are self destructive tend to think they are a bad person,and/or hate themselves. They have to "punish" themselves for being "bad".Often they struggle to enjoy themselves because they feel they dont "deserve" it.

Often they tend to work really hard/push themselves,if only they worked harder/became a better person they might "deserve" some happiness.

Thats how i see it anyway.

Paulr:

That sums it up very neatly.

I never take time to enjoy myself and very rarely laugh or smile. (Except with my wonderful girlfriend of course!)

FFS I'm not even 25 yet!

The saddest thing (not that I mind now) I lost all my friends due to being so negative and moody.

Oh well.

Go and see your gp if you are worried about this, he'll posibly refer you to a counsellor or psycologist.

A good few sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) should help you out as it sounds just like what you need to help get to the bottom of why you are being so hard on yourself.

Prozac's an easy fix but unlikely to do you much good as ain't going to get to the bottom of the problem etc...

St John's Wort (herbal ant-depressant) coupled with more exercise, may give your mood enough of a lift to help you start feeling a bit better about yourself

Good luck

Although St John's Wort is herbal its still quite potent and I would advise seeing your gp before you considered taking this too.

It sounds as though you need to do something you enjoy, a hobby - work hard during the week and aim to do your chosen hobby at least once a week. It will give you something to look forward to at the end of the week.

I'll second what Sipie says, no need to feel embarrased about it. Some people have low levels of "feel-good" neuro-transmitters in their brains, which will have various effects on the way they feel, but in men the things you mention are pretty typical. In some instances there may have been an incident in your life that has started it off, but it is perfectly possible to have this happen to you for no particular reason. Just like having low blood sugar levels or whatever else it's just something that happens to some people, and it's something that can be fixed.
