It's also a stupid way to measure if someone is overweight.
Body fat percentage is much more useful.
I'm told that BMI doesn't need to take build into account as it judges whether a person is putting strain on their heart and joints etc. That, apparently, is to do with how heavy a person is and it doesn't matter how the weight is made up. So if someone is very muscular, so the claim goes, they are above average weight and could be straining their body.
Personally, I don't believe a word of it.

TK, what it specifically cannot do is take account of how the weight was gained. If it was by drinking beer and eating takeaways, then yes, it has some merit. But if it has been from resistance training, which obviously strengthens all the bodyparts you mentioned, then it becomes almost meaningless.
Watercress sandwich anyone?

Which is why I said, "Personally, I don't believe a word of it."
The guff above was what my GP told me when I asked him to justify using BMI last time he had to prescribe medication that has contra-indications for overweight people.
As it was, I was within the acceptable range, but you, Tel, would not have been and his guidelines would have said not to prescribe to you. Which seems daft to me. Not that it would have mattered in this case as you're not likely ever to need this particular treatment!
As far as I am concerned, BMI has no merit as a measure of how healthy a person's weight is. I'll stick to using BF%, heart rate and recovery times.

Si, there isn't a formula for BF%. You have to have it measured, either by bio-impedance or calipers.
It looks to me as though you are confusing the BMI formula and BF%.
BMI = weight (in kg) divided by (height (in m) squared)

Si, it doesn't say you are fat, it says you are overweight.
According to my doctor, overweight means heavier than your body was designed to be.
He reckons it doesn't matter if you're heavy because you are fat, or because you are muscular. As far as he is concerned, if you are heavier than you are meant to be, you are putting undue strain on your body.
As I've said, I don't believe him, but by his explanation, overweight does not necessarily mean fat.
