TurboKitty 28 October 2003 09:00 AM

It's not a percentage. It's an index.

ChrisB 28 October 2003 09:02 AM

It's also a stupid way to measure if someone is overweight.

Body fat percentage is much more useful.

I'm told that BMI doesn't need to take build into account as it judges whether a person is putting strain on their heart and joints etc. That, apparently, is to do with how heavy a person is and it doesn't matter how the weight is made up. So if someone is very muscular, so the claim goes, they are above average weight and could be straining their body.

Personally, I don't believe a word of it.

Charlie WRXSTI 28 October 2003 09:05 AM

31.24

I shall be mainly eating nothing for the next year or so :(

carl 28 October 2003 09:05 AM

24.82

Knockin' on the door...

Davie 28 October 2003 09:05 AM

23.48 Mon Then...

TelBoy 28 October 2003 09:08 AM

TK, what it specifically cannot do is take account of how the weight was gained. If it was by drinking beer and eating takeaways, then yes, it has some merit. But if it has been from resistance training, which obviously strengthens all the bodyparts you mentioned, then it becomes almost meaningless.

Watercress sandwich anyone? :D

Scooby96 28 October 2003 09:15 AM

On Nimble bread I hope TB!

TurboKitty 28 October 2003 09:17 AM

Which is why I said, "Personally, I don't believe a word of it."

The guff above was what my GP told me when I asked him to justify using BMI last time he had to prescribe medication that has contra-indications for overweight people.

As it was, I was within the acceptable range, but you, Tel, would not have been and his guidelines would have said not to prescribe to you. Which seems daft to me. Not that it would have mattered in this case as you're not likely ever to need this particular treatment!

As far as I am concerned, BMI has no merit as a measure of how healthy a person's weight is. I'll stick to using BF%, heart rate and recovery times.

TelBoy 28 October 2003 09:18 AM

Oh yes. With some shocking vegan sunflower oil tasteless spread thing too please!

super_si 28 October 2003 09:21 AM

TK do you know the BF% Formular?? Ive forgetten it. Something like height * 2 /weight

TurboKitty 28 October 2003 09:25 AM

Si, there isn't a formula for BF%. You have to have it measured, either by bio-impedance or calipers.

It looks to me as though you are confusing the BMI formula and BF%.

BMI = weight (in kg) divided by (height (in m) squared)

NACRO 28 October 2003 09:26 AM

Lol- mine says overweight too! Not something usually said about me-I'm 6ft 4 and 96 Kilos, most of it muscle.

Andy Tang 28 October 2003 09:41 AM

Bodyfat = 33.4% (from one of those dodgy £10 Maplin gadgets)

I guess I'm still fat!!

TurboKitty 28 October 2003 09:43 AM

Si, it doesn't say you are fat, it says you are overweight.

According to my doctor, overweight means heavier than your body was designed to be.

He reckons it doesn't matter if you're heavy because you are fat, or because you are muscular. As far as he is concerned, if you are heavier than you are meant to be, you are putting undue strain on your body.

As I've said, I don't believe him, but by his explanation, overweight does not necessarily mean fat.

Davie 28 October 2003 09:44 AM
