I've been ( 5 or 6 years ago now though ).
Big ex-pat community, beer is good food is cheap, people are friendly. Get out of the hotels to see the best of it.
2 sorts of taxis available to get you around 1. Merc's driven by suicidal locals, 2. Ladas driven by suicidal locals. Survivability is better in the merc
I was working at MobilRom (GSM op) . Lots of building happening post chauchescu (sp?), so place could have drastically changed by now. Local supermarkets if the missus likes caviar.

I've worked in Constantza(about 3 hrs from Bucharest)
I absolutely loved it,locals were incredibly friendly and everything is soo cheap for 'us brits'..hows this 2 packets of cigs
and 2 beers=£2
If you venture outside of the city tho, then you will encounter quite a culture shock, unbeleivable poverty..dead animals in the road..corrupt police stopping foreign vehicles and charging bogus fines..prostitutes....abandoned cars...derelict factory's..etc..
Roads which are barely passable(the peasants steal all the manhole covers)...and Renault 11's everywhere
Make sure that you take some US dollars with you, don't go near the stray dogs(there will be plenty of'em)
Only use official Taxi's and agree the fare beforehand and DO NOT give the begging children ANYTHING!!!otherwise you will end up looking like the Pied Piper
Other than that, use your common sense and have a great time
You really will enjoy it.

Hello
I have to say that having just reutned back from Bucharest, it's a complete dump.
Full of dodgy people, dirt and generally not a pleasant experience.
