Anyone good with electronics?

My friend owns a recruitment company and has a few members of staff he'd like to monitor without incurring the cost of buying expensive call recording equipment. If anyone is able to make one of these:
phone_extension_monitor
Could they mail me as per my profile. There are no employment or privacy issues for either the staff or the clients as these angles are covered by their contracts of employment / terms & conditions which give him (the employer) the right to monitor calls for training purposes.

Which Switch does he have?
Can he not make his phone a Master and the employees' phones slaves, so that all he has to do is remotely press a button to listen into any one of his employees' phone conversations?
We had this set up at a Call Centre. The Supervisor had her phone with add-on modules and each button was allocated to an Agent. When the Agent was on a call, the light next to their button on the Supervisor's phone illuminated. All the Supervisor had to do to listen to that conversation was press the button.
She could hear, but not be heard or participate in the conversation.

why doesnt he just buy one? or better still, sit next to the member of staff and discuss their technique. Sounds a bit dodgy if he wants to monitor them without them knowing he is doing it there and then.

I doubt it - it looks like not much more than a crystal earpiece and a DC blocking capacitor - a couple of quid at most.
That's not the point, though - if calls may be monitored for training purposes, why the need for monitoring to be covert? Are you sure your intentions are within the terms of your contract?

A few members of HIS staff (nothing to do with me!) have expressed a wish that they dont know when he is monitoring them so it doesnt put them off! I just thought I'd ask on here on his behalf and if I could come up with some credible help I wqould pass it on for the cost of a pint or 3
