IMHO Never use any stuff from a chemists that says gets rid of earwax. I did and suffered for weeks, go the doctors, and dont be tempted to stuff a cotton wool bud down there for a little dig either!

If it's wax, you can get something to soften the wax at your local chemists. I think you can use warm (not hot - don't burn yourself) olive oil to do the same job.

warm olive oil can soften ear wax.
I got an ear infection in greece onece and the local quack syringed my ears with some man size medievil bike pump type thing , it was not a pleasant experience but the difference after a few hours was amazing.

you can get ear candles from "health shops" (the ones with the hippies in).
they are hollow candles that you put in your ear lying down and light. they dry the wax and suck it out into the base of the candle.
they are ok for light wax deposits. if you are industrial strength you need olive oil + nurse.
.... after that you won't give a fek about your ear

Im now on my 8th week of Ear Ache, Im assuming from the symptoms Ive had previously, that it is an ear infection of some sorts
most of the time its ok, but sometimes, it feels like someone is shoving a red hot needle in my ear
My mate had his ear syringed by the local doc, and got 3 grand compensation after they perforated his ear drum

If you think it's a wax problem, get some drops to soften the wax and whilst at the chemist ask them if they have an ear pump. It's the same theory as the nurse with the syringe to get the bigger bits of wax out of your ear. Put the drops in your ear and leave overnight. Next morning, just pop the bulb/pear shaped thing in some warm (not hot) water and stick the pointy bit in your ear (it's okay, it's very soft rubber) and rinse your ear with it. After a few squirts the bigger bits of wax will come out, your hearing will improve 200% and hopefully, your earache will be gone in a day or so.
Also note that earache can very often be a sign of an impending dental problem.
See what having kids teaches you? Good luck !
