Hello

Does anyone have SkyPlus? Is it good? With no per month cost, it seems like a good idea to me......

(Sky have just released a "new" package that you do not have to pay a monthly fee for SkyPlus if you subscribe to other premium channels. And as I pay £33 a month, I think that includes me.)

Had it for about 12 months. I would not be without it and it's one of the best gagets I have ever got. I even used to pay £10 a month for the service. If this no becomes free if you subscribe to specific services and you already have these services then why not go for it.

CamK:

Yes you get a new SkyBox.

SiCotty:

I want to do my own installation. From what I understand, there are two sockets on the back on the new box and I have to split the cable from the receiver to the box, correct?

Thanks,

Steve.

Yes, it will replace the old digibox, the only extra thing is you may need is a dual LNB on the dish, and that comes as part of the sky+ installation.

You get Dolby sound out of them on the film channels too.

That's actually a good (ish) deal. They used to be £299 (then £249) plus £10 A MONTH.

I couldn't live without it

Its fanatastic

They supply a new Quad receiver to your dish and they have to run another cable into your home[Giving you 2 more possible outputs if you want to keep your old box aswell]

The live pause is great

Good trick for watching ITV films set it to record then start watching the recording 1/2 an hour later then when you come to a break you can fast forward it by the time you get to the end of the film you have caught up in real time but missed all the adverts

Only taken Sky 3 years something more than Tivo.....
Now if only we could marry the Tivo(superior) software
to the now (superior) Sky hardware.

Tho as I have 2 X Tivo this new "upgrade" by Sky is too late.

So - if I upgrade to Sky+, and keep my old Sony digibox, what can I receive with the old box without taking a 2nd £10/month subscription for a 2nd box?

ie, will the old box receive anything other than BBC/ITV without a smartcard?

Also - can anyone explain why a dual LNB is required to record 2 channels?

Why can't one LNB provide a signal to a box, and the box just tunes into two frequencies???
Never understood this about satellite!! Can anyone explain?

You don't need two tv aerial downleads to record 2 analogue terrestrial tv progs, so why 2 x LNBs?

Finally, do you NEED 2 downleads from dish to Sky+ box? This would cause a prob in my setup, as LNB cable goes into loft to distribution box, and I only have one high quality sat-rf-cable going down to Sky box from this distribution box.....

that confuses me too. Sky offer a mirror sub for £15 a month, but that doesn't need a quad LNB, even though you are running two boxes - the equivalent of Sky+

Maybe they assume you'll keep your first box? Is there no option to keep the dual LNB if you only plan to keep one box?

IIRC the digital, as were the analogue, satellite signals are all polarised. Therefore on every frequency there are horizontal as well as vertically aligned channels (which doubles the number of channels a transponder can transmit I guess, or at least allows for closer channel separation without crosstalk interference).

In order for the tuner to tune to a channel correctly it must (a) be tuned to the correct frequency, and (b) switch the LNB to the correct polarisation for the channel (V or H).

With only a single LNB you could only record half the channels (as you would be restricted to those on the polarisation that you were currently viewing, so you could record all the V channels if you were watching a V channel - but wouldn't be able to 'tune' to any of the H channels).

Therefore, for Sky+ you need and there are two LNBs which can be switched independantly (or one is always H and the other is always V - dunno). A voltage is applied to the coax to provide the polarisation switching signal.

Anyway - I think that's correct, though I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong or slightly out.

Thinking about getting this myself but wondered if someone could give me the dimensions of the unit as I do not have much space left in my TV cabinet.

Help much appreciated.

I have it as well, didn't think much of Sky's create your own channel advertising as I thought I would use it as a fancy VCR.

I'm a total convert now, it totaly transformed the way we watch TV. I'll record everything I fancy then watch what I want when I want. The hard drive records the bitstream from the LNB not the picture so playback quality is the same as watching live even the the Dolby Digital 5.1 films.

For those that have asked you should get a quad LNB which will enable you to have two Sky+ boxes or Sky+ and two standard digiboxes. Any of the four outputs can be H or V so its just like having four dishes.

Order Sky+ online and you get installation for £1, don't order on the phone or buy from the high street as it's £50 installation. Some high street stores will sell you a Sky+ box for £199 but not supply a quad LNB so be carefull.

Neil W,
Not at home so can't measure the V2 Sky+ box.
If you look in the picture of my rack it's the white/silver unit on the bottom shelf, sticks out like a sore thumb.

had sky+ for about 4 mnths now, and its great except for one thing........if the program overruns you miss the end, theres no programme delivery control like on vcr's. this is always happening when i record wrc on eurosport gb, and i have to remember to record the programme afterwards! anyone else have this problem?

Cool

Stormy,

It's all down to the channel operators. Sky+ works off the EPG, if programs overrun the channel operator should inform Sky control who will update the EPG in real time.
Unfortunatly Eurosport fail to do this on a regular basis. You can go into Sky+ setup and add extra minutes onto each recording.

On a posotive note I had Ch4's WRC coverage on Serieslink this weekend, Sky+ has recorded all three programs even though the time was altered. It's even automaticaly set the Shaedown to be recorded for the Rally of GB next Saturday.
