Right, having a 'discussion' with my mum over tea, I have just moved a lamp from over our dining table, which had three 40w bulbs, I have replces it with a single 100w light, now then, mum reckons that the three were brighter as it was equvilent to 120w, whereas I think that the single 100w bulb is brighter, my reckoning is that the 40w bulbs don't get brighter just cos there are 3 of them, it might give a greater coverage of light, but it can't be brighter, cos they're only 40w, so, my question is this.
Who's right???????

I would think that the heat losses might be greater on 3 bulbs rather than a single bulb, so the light given out by a single 100W bulb could be greater. But I don't know anything as yesterday (now it's the 20th Sept) was my birthday and I've been in the pub all evening.

I too am drunk but rekon that the loss from 3 x 40's would bring them down to less lumens than 1 x 100. But I am guessing, go to www.overgrow.com and there you will find your answer I am sure.

Power rating. ie the number of Watts, eg 100W is a measure of the electrical energy used by the bulb. It is not a measure of the amount of light energy emited.
So in terms of electrical energy consumed, your mother is costing you most, however, the light emited is a function of the type of bulb in use, for example a Xenon 40W bulb will emit more light than a tungsten 40W bulb.
So to be able to answer the question we need to know the materials in the bulbs and their energy eficiency index.
P.S Stop drinking tea and get out more!

A good way to tell is to illuminate the bulbs, let them warm up and then place your tongue on them.
If a single tongue-touch of the 100w bulb makes you cry louder than 3 tongue-touches of the 40w bulbs then, voila, there's your answer
Do you often have these chats with your mother?

Generally speaking my conversations with my Mum revolve around if I'm eating enough and can I take her bet to the bookies.
I can honestly say hand on heart we've never discussed lightbulbs.
