good used city car w/automatic gearbox?

for the wife. Wants a little car (polo size maximum) as a runabout, and must be automatic.
Now, autos aren't that common in the UK, and small autos seem even less so.
Can anyone recommend a good make? Cheap as chips preferably

Dont get a Corsa Auto, my in laws have one as a spare car for visitors and me when my Golf is off the road (which is fairly often) and its very useful but fairly painful, to cap it all it has a sport mode which as far as I can see just makes more noise.
Go for a jap built auto, Yaris or something.

She's also looking at less than £4k (less than £3k ideally)
She's taking refresher lessons in a micra, and is complaining about poor acceleration and heavy power steering. I guess that'll teach her to only ever drive skylines, BMWs and Imprezas (though she's not getting her hands on that one)

Well I was just selling my Micra Auto but no-one seemed interested!
Oh well, I had it for 5 years and it did me proud.
Why does she want an Auto? Manuals are much better and more fun to drive surely?
