This place a about 80 minutes from Cancun - I had heard that Cancun was a bit tacky, hence why we are not stopping there. (Heard good reports about the Moon Palace though) I want to experience the real mexico, but car hire seems to cost a small fortune
We are stopping in a 5* all inclusive resort and have booked premium seats for both flights, so should be good.

DO NOT HIRE A CAR!!!
We were told this by our travel rep because the police like to pull over tourists in their hire cars and rip them off for whatever cash they have in their pockets. "Yeah, right" I thought, until I witnessed it, every time you saw a cop car it had pulled a tourist over. Use the buses, they're cheap and run very often.
Personally, I loved Cancun, but stayed away from the hotel zone for meals etc and spent time downtown and on Isla Mujeres, best holiday ever.
Some friends reckoned they felt "unsafe" downtown, but we never did, had a whale of a time and we did all the touristy trips too (swimming with dolphins was the experience of a lifetime!)
And stay away from the crushed ice margaritas, even when they're free, you'll regret it otherwise!

People think the Irish talk, people think the Italians talk, people think the Amerians are loud - but by God the Mexicans are something else. Every conversation seems to consist of everyone talking at the top of their voice, all at the same time, not listening to anyone else and nobody can get a word in edgeways. It is impossible to hear what any individual person is saying, you just have to weigh up the mood of the group as a whole and pick little snippets out to make sense of - in fact a bit like the Scoobynet forums on some days

Cancun is the only place in mexico to be, and the moon palace resort speaks for it self. You will not find any rif raf in the resort. Wanted to be treated like a king for two weeks then go to the moon palace. Use the buses for transport as there are cheap. Shop around for your excursions work out cheaper.
Hiring a car is no problem, just remember to fill up as there are not many petrol stations.
Probably one of the best resorts in the world.

if you do not want to stay in cancun / moon palace stay at the aventura palace in puerto aventura, its a sister hotel to the Moon Palace / beach palace ect ect. and they do a bus service between them so you can spend days at the other hotels.
The day I had at the moon palace sucked in comparisonto the other palace hotels, far to crowded, full of kids and big waits for the windsurfers ect.
The aventura palace is fantastic, set in the jungle, Adults only no kids. Fantastic pools good nightlife (adults only :-)).

forgot to add,
go to tulum and chichiniza (SP) for the mayan stuff fantastic, but if you do go on trips be careful of the tacky tequila and cactus shops they take you too, Heard stories of people being locked in to buy stuff.
if youre a diver be very careful about what sites they take you too as some are awful.
