Anyone out there with long term experience of these? Are they very accurate? Do they make the whole weight reduction thing more complicated or less so?
Our electronic bathroom scale has just 'died' so we're looking to buy a new one. Found this sitewww.scalesontheweb.co.ukwhich seems to be very good. Whole lot of different scales available including the body fat monitor type.
Incidentally I've heard that people who carry a lot of muscle don't find these scales to be so accurate. Why is that?

Save yourself the money, stand in the mirror and take a look, if unsure take a picture, show it to other and see what they say. Maybe n ot as scientific but then again what is.
You could grade it say;
Waif like

not so slim
Does my bum look big in this
looking a bit chunky
Who ate some of the pies
Who ate all the pies
Bloater
Fat as ****
Pass me the Atkins book i'm a gonna jam it in my mouth so's i can't eat no more
I'll get my (XXXL coat)

They use bioelectrical impedance, but their kit is rather more accurate than the bathroom scales.
The scales seem to do some sort of guestimate based on weight.
It was pointed out on here some time ago that if you measure your body fat on the scales, then immediately do so again, but holding a non-metallic weight, (so as not to interfere with the electrical pulse), the second reading is higher.
The kit they use at the gym isn't based on weight. I don't know much about it, except that it's supposed to be reasonably accurate.

Guess I'll buy a decent set of ordinary bathroom scales and maybe one of these....

save your money and get a skin-fold caliper test done instead
or just get a set of calipers yourself (£10ish) and learn how to take the measurements
electronic systems are just not accurate... for comparative purposes they may be ok.
of course, a hydrostatic water tank test is the only totally accurate way.. but skin-fold generally comes close.

Andrew,
I have a Tanita set - I will find out the name tonight if you wish.
I have the box. It is less than 6 months old and barely used (less than 10 times).
Let me know if you are interested.

i have a top end bio imp device and it is far more accurate than any skin fold test i have ever seen (i have carried out about 2500 skin fold tests on clients....i would say about 10% of ppl "trained" to do these test do them right....i put no faith in them at all other than as a comparative test for yourself week to week)
My bio imp test have always been close to my imersion test results.
