Try getting an on-line bank like Intelligent Finance account or opening one with a German, French or US bank in london - easier than a UK bank.

Re the mobile - pay as you go until shes been here for 6/12 months and she can then show bank statements and get a contract one!

Question

Afternoon all,

My girlfriend has just moved from Germany to the UK to live with me. She is English but has lived over there for 23 years!
So, we are now having problems getting her a Bank Account and a mobile because they are asking for proof of address in terms of a utilities bill etc etc. She will hopefully get a bank statement from MLP (her bank in Germany) which SHOULD be ok but may take some time.

I tried to change the name on our telephone bill today but it has to be the name the original account was in, i.e. mine. Any help would be much appreciated. I realise it is not simple due to people gettng false names/identities etc but it is now very annoying!!!

Cheers,
Mossman

If she gets a provisional driving license over here, that's normally enough for banks etc. Had the same problem with the new au pair

Hi there.
Lived in Switzerland for 7 years before returning to the UK to study for a year. Also had issues getting a mobile contract without recent UK history. Was living in student accomodation so a land line wasn't an option.

Finally, I had to leave a 500 quid cash deposit with Vodaphone before they would give me a mobile contract. They didn't give me any interest on it of course.

Even though they had my deposit it still didn't stop them buggering around with an internal call cost limit (Vodabudget) which meant they cut me off after 50 quids worth of calls or about two weeks - not that they told me any of this up front of course. Complete muppets. Avoid

Good luck

Suresh

Hiya Jon,

Glad to hear Kate's finally moved over!

Sorry I can't offer any advice, just thought I'd say hello and good luck!

Long time no speak matey.

Letter from employer, and from pervious German bank should do it.

I know how painfull all this is, as I'm in the same situation over here, they won't accept any insurance or driving history, they can't or won't check against my UK Credit rating, so getting a bank account was a bit of a pain, but thankfully the company used the same bank, so that helped, as for a credit card, well, I've no credit history so cannot get one, and to get credit history I need to use a credit card. Mad? just slightly, but it's worth it.

Personally I'd have moved over to Germany if I were, no nasty speed cameras
