Gatso on the other side of the road
#1
Last night, I was in 40 zone, doing a little over that (about 45-50), and the camera on the other side of the road flashed. I spoke to someone, and they said the police aren't allowed to prosecute you with it, as it's a Human right violation, for taking photo of your face on the road (???) Does anyone have an experience with it?

The camera has detected that "something" has triggered it, however, you can only be prosecuted when you are driving on the same side of the road, past the camera. Also, due to the fact that when the second snap was taken you were probably already past the camera, or at the very least, outwith the calibrated road markings.

GATSO's only snap you from behind (ie, once you've past it).
I think it's the TRUVELO ones that snap you as you approach and they are designed to picture the driver so you can't get away with claiming you're not the driver.
If you were snapped by a GATSO - no worries
If it was a TRUVELO - hard lines
Best of luck,
Blobster
Of course I could be talking out of my hat.....

It happened to me as well with no consequences, bt I think because the Gatso was out of film.
There was a Gatso on the other side of the road facing me and it flashed once.
Either it was out of film or it got confused because of the direction.
I was concerned for a while, but never received a notification, so should be ok.

I,ve actually seen gatso's flash for no apparent reason a couple of times, once i was parked up at the side of the road some way away from the gatso and it went off with no cars even on the road.

I always set the gatso off coming up a hill towards it, with the camera on the other side of the road.. It can only record your speed if you go past it with it behind you. It will take 2 pictures (Flash twice) and they will work out your speed measuring the gap between flashes..
Dont worry fella, I'm sure you'll be alright!!!

Digressing slightly here.....
During the quieter parts of the night shift, I would park up, out of sight, on a side road of a dual carriageway directly opposite a 50mph Gatso. When cars went past, the drivers usually half sleeping, I'd give the full beam a quick double flash. Brakes lights and confusion ensued.
How sad, but it was fun at the time!

Gatso's that flash you on the opposite side of the road are indeed out of film so you've got no worries. An of the nice policemen that use this site would be able to confirm this, but will they???

There's a camera near me that i can always set of going in the opposite direction, whether going faster than the speed limit or not.
They cannot prosecute you since the evidence is the speed at which you cover the little white lines on the road, and since you're going in the opposite direction, they can't show it.
As i understand it, there's no human rights issues to having your photo taken. Truvelo cameras take your photo from the front (infra red - so no flash to blind you) but they will only send the photo if you specifically ask for it, to prevent any embarrasment if you were driving with someone you didn't want to get caught with!

yes they do have to be visible...all the ones around Leeds are now yellow boxes and a road sign saying approx between 50 - 300m away "speed camera"
There is a road in Leeds "Middleton" that have both facing and non-facing camera's with markings on the road and there is about 4 sets of these roughly 1 mile in a straight line.

Not true Wurzel! There are new ones mounted on the base of the overhead signs now... Just before entering a tunnel near me I saw the car infront get flashed. As I passed I saw the lines on the road, and the camera and flash unit above. It is still there - and in all 3 lanes... before hand the speed is open then a 120 sign, then the 100 sign then the 80 sign with camera... then the tunnel. So be careful...

As for the comment about being OK to speed on a highway because there are no camera's is not the attitude! If you double your speed you quadruple your stopping distance. If you speed you run the risk of being caught, and when you get caught you will probably come on here moaning about it and how unfair the police are.
As for the points about the GATSO camera on the other side of the road that flashed, you would not be dealt with for that regardless, as the GATSO does not have type approval for forward facing photography.

i used to love bombing down the a4 just outside osterely station & triggering the camera on the otherside of the road, what fun just to scare the motorists on the other side, it senses that something has enetered its laser field & flashes automatically, they cant get you though mate,

So they cant do you if you are travelling torwards the Gatso,
Round here they have got white lines on both sides of the carridgway to and from the Gatso.
Is this just scare tactics then ??

paul thats just sp they can turn them around/move them for different lanes, i was once told that if you get falshed by a gatso when your going the oposite way it means it's just a dummy one and cant tell traffic direction, but imho there is a great deal of urban myth about these things.

Ps i speed from time to time rarely in 30's and 40's though if i get caught i'll shrug my shoulders and do my time but i won't whinge about it on here and see if i can get off it, and this isn't a dig at original poster

Don't forget the "hidey holes" that are becoming more frequent in the more rural areas. These are induction loops buried in the road that the Police can plug into, then pull you further up the road.
