best way to get rid of cd collection
#1
I have been using MP3 for a good 3/4 years now and hardly ever play cds as a result (use mp3 in car too). Moving house so thinking of a clearout hence the cds can go.
Am I wasting my time - what are 500 albums worth these days?
Selling individually is too much ag and I guess they're not worth much anyway - perhaps sell the whole lot to a 2nd hand dealer. There is a lot of good stuff in amongst the tat in there ranging from modern (well 3yr old) pop to classic Floyd etc, it seems a waste to sell them for 50p each.
Hmmm.

Not sure about legality of having mp3's when you don't have the original copies (not that anyone cares about this )
Anyway, probably best to write out a list of all the CD's and post that then dealers or individuals may buy the lot if there's enough decent stuff there.
On another point, there could be gems in the collection. For example, I have a rare shoegazing single from the early 90's that I've 'heard' is worth £40/£50. Never know, you may have a few valuable ones in there.

Sounds like making a full list is a good first step - not sure if I have the patience to put them all in EBAY though.
Interesting point on legality... mind you, who has an mp3 collection that is fully legal these days...

I can't see how it would be illegal to keep the mp3s. You mean someone actually thinks they should delete the mp3s and destroy backup CDs when the original is lost or sold? Crazy. I would suggest selling them in batches of 10 (grouped by artist/ type etc, not just random pot luck). eBay is a good bet.

notting hill exchange will normally give you a couple of quid for each cd as long as they are in okay condition.

Are there any record fairs in your area? There's one here every couple of months or so where there are plenty of dealers plus independent "experts" who will value vinyl and CDs.
The local free ads paper or the library may be good places to investigate.
