Question

Just moved down to a village near Devizes (love it - right in the middle of 6X Country) and I'm planning a jolly on the plain with a couple of mates. Plan is to ride out on the Friday to a pub, stay overnight, mess around on the Saturday, another pub taht night and a steady peddle back on the Sunday.

I've had a look at the map and there are loads of routes but what's the score with going into the danger area? Is it active the whole time? If not, is there a number you can call to get the latest info?

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers
Kav

Cool

Devizes eh? Head for the Kennet and Avon Canal and follow it along to Honey Street. There is a top pub and camping and wonderful countryside. Plus you will be in the heart of crop circle country

Devizes? Welcome to my Kingdom!

Hello Mark,

The Plain can be a bit of a no go apart from the obvious tracks. You're in luck this weekend though as a lot of the usually inaccessable tracks are open for the Bank Holiday.

There is a bit of a do going on at Imber as wellhere which may or may not be up your street but you should still be able to visit the village (usually closed).

Ooh yes, red flags=upgrade your helmet and body armour.

Roy.

P.S. Which village are you in?

MTB'd on the plain a fair amount. Fairly good fun, a lot of the MOD land is fine for riding on and no-one really bothers you unless they're practising. Mostly smooth lanes, but there are some good steep/twisty bits on the edges.

Get anywhere near the German village and you'll soon know about it though

you can actually cycle around the whole of the edge of Salisbury Plain, a trip of about 50miles if I remember right.

Sorry - should have said it's the weekend after the bank holiday we're going.

What's the score then? Stick to the main tracks and we should be OK?

Cheers

Tend to be quite a few unexploded things away from the main tracks too.

Mark/Kav,

Pop down to the Rose and Crown at Worton if you haven't already, they do fantastic grub served by the most buxom barmaid you'll see in a long time. (Apologies if you'd rather eye up a barman Really friendly with chickens and doves scratching about in the beer garden. In fact, i might go down meself now.

Or.. The Raven at Poulshot is a bike ride rather than a walk away from you and they do loads of beer straight from the wood. Grub's not quite as good and it gets packed with tourists but still worth a visit.

Or...You could start working your way around the boozers in town.

Maybe see you around.

Roy.

UncleBuck,

I was going to mention the Barge in the cropcircle thread but didn't for fear of being labelled a hippy.

Cheers Roy - I hope so!

Had a swift half in the Rose and Crown the day we moved in. I went in on the pretence of getting the removal men a carry out

Had a nosh at The Raven a while ago when we came to see the house. Proper boozer with great food - I've never had such a fine pint of 6X in my life. We had another meal at The Barge at Seend last weekend - the sun was high in the sky, pint in one hand, bowl of mussels in the other - was it Jack Nicholson (sp?) who said "Life doesn't get much better than this"?

I think we're going to like it down here.

Cheers

Roy - I used to ride the K and A several times a year in the summer. Honey Street is great because it is almost exactly half way between Bath and Reading. All that crop circle stuff is a recent innovation to get the punters in.

Old hippie, moi? Surely not.

I'm a retired hippy too! They seem far too hard core these days for my liking, and way too young for my *** nowadays.

If you boys ( Markus and friends, and uncle buck ) fancy a ride down the K & A let me know.

Hey! Don't tell the wife but i could even ofer you a room for the night.

Glad you liked the locals, [tentative mode] we should meet up some time [/tentative mode]

It would be a pleasure to meet you guys.

NSR camping holiday in Wiltshire?
