Question

Reading the "Lorries overtaking lorries" thread made me think about this, but have never asked.

On motorways I often see HGVs flashing other vehicles once they've been overtaken. In the case of HGVs passing HGVS, I've always assumed it means something along the lines of "pull in, there's a sufficient gap".

What about the case when a car has passed a HGV? The same message; "ok to pull in"? Or, have I been grossly misinterpreting all these years?

The message is, 'I've watched you and your kind doing the last 500 miles in the middle lane, there is another one here on the left that you can use if you're not actually overtaking anyone in the next mile, then when we get to the next hill and I need to pull out to overtake a slower lorry there will be a space for me because the lane won't be blocked by a long line of Vauxhalls doing 65 miles per hour'

Maybe it's using some sort of frequency modulation. Multiple light frequencies muxxed together to appear as white light.

Or maybe they're just saying "hi". Or...?

They're actually watching and waiting for the best moment to flash, when you're looking in your mirrors before moving into the inside lane. By timing it right, they can momentarily blind the driver, causing him/her to swerve off the carriageway, down an embankment and crash in a ball of flames.

Thumbs up

Generally means "safe to pull over" or "thank you" unless of course you have annoyed them - in which case it means "if I get my hands on you I'll wring your feckin neck"
You decide which - just get it right especially if there is reason to stop shortly afterwards !!!!!!

Safe driving

Its clear to pull back in to the left. Lorry drivers appreciate it if you give them a similar signal in traffic.
