Red face

Need some opinions here,

I swim 2 or 3 times a week about 1km a time and last night when I was in mid session I got a terrible pain in my right calf muscle - it was agony, causing me to stop and only just reach the side of the pool.

My calf muscle pretty much bunched right up almost into a ball shape and even today I cant walk much on it

So question is was this just a bad bowt of cramp or a pulled/strained/knackered calf muscle

Any advice? Certainly dont want to get this again!

Neil

Muscle cramp.

if you get it again, try and strech you calf by gently pulling your toes upwards.

Ensure your salt balance is good, drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and plenty of stretching of those calf muscles.
I know how you feel, I used to suffer from it badly. Seems to have lessened over the past few months fortunately.

Defo cramp. I used to get that all the time in my calfs at the local pool. Make sure you're drink a lot beforehand. If your swimming energetically, you'll still loose fluids but not notice it until you cramp up. It's also partly down to public pools being flippin freezin cold. Try warming up before jumping straight into the pool and doin laps.

Be careful once you do cramp up. If you start exercising the muscle you'll likely tear it and do more damage. Shouldn't be anything serious but it might make it ache for a few days afterwards.

Could be a case of chloro-leech (Bloodus Suckus V. Nastius).

Apparently the creature burrows under the skin, sucks up a load of lactic acid (developed from the exercise), together with blood, and swells to a huge ball. After that, it multiplies, and the resulting mass of creatures infects the blood stream, causing inseptisemia, and the leg or limb affected has to be amputated.

It's either that or cramp.

Duck Pond - you had me worried there or a bit

All above seems like good advice cheers. Will try drinking some more and warming up - problem is the pool is bleeding freezing (-5 at last count ) so as soon as you stop for a 5 minute breather you get cold

lol @ Duck Pond....

Def. cramp, not good when swimming, mind you, you've already been given all the advice I'd give

For those who suffer from cramp when not excerising - try a bioflow ( can't find the "proper" website, but this is them) I was cynical at first, but they really work - my strap broke on mine last week and I've suddenly started suffering from cramps again
