Jury Service
Cheers guys, its not for me but a friend. They thought they'd duck out and go on holiday instead but I've relayed your words to them and there up for it now. I guess it just sounded a bit scary to them from the off...

If you really want to get out of it you can-for example just tell them that you are an anarchist and against the justice system as a whole and therefore can't be considered for service. You will never hear from them again.

Yes but they pass you file onto MI5 (the real one not those wannabe actors on BBC1 Monday nites) and they then take a keen interest in you and yours

Done it and had an excellent time
Did 3 cases in all and had armed robbery, car theft and burglary. Guess what - all 3 went down
In the court next to us was an IRA (allegedly) case, big feking security, stood outside every morning watching the armed police turn up with conyoys of secuirty and more machine guns than you could shake a stick at. Was superb
Poor jury though had been on the case for months
This was at Maidstone and I would definately not mind doing it again.

From: From where I am standing I can see your house
I have got out of jury service three times now and have been called up again. I will write another letter to try to get out of it again.
If you are 'invited' to attend, which is compulsory, and make an excuse, you will get another letter around a year later, once you have served you are excused for 5 years.
I wouldn't mind doing it but will lose loads of money in serving.

From: Swilling coffee at my lab bench
I was called up whilst a student. I phoned to explain that the only reason I was in that town (and therefore, on the particular electoral roll from which my name had been taken) was that I was studying, and that several weeks taken out of an 8-week term would irreparably harm my academic career. They agreed and let me off.
The form does invite you to state times which are especially inconvenient, the implication being that you can defer service if there's anything in particular (like a paid-for family holiday) coming up. In my case, though, the summons had been sitting in my college pigeon hole for weeks and I'd missed the deadline. In any case, I'd either have been living in that area because I was there to study, or I'd have been living miles away outside term time.
I know there have been changes (or at least, proposed changes) to make it harder to get out of doing it, but I'm not sure what they are. Could just be that excuses don't receive the same degree of sympathy any more. Why they can't invite people to nominate a time (say, a 2 week period some time in the next few months) when it IS convenient, I'll never know. I wouldn't mind serving, but not if it meant missing a holiday

is there anything that precludes someone from being requested?
All I remember getting is a bit towards my travel expenses.
