I can't believe i'm doing this, but here's my CV... can anyone think of a job for me? I think i've jumped in the wrong bed with my new job at RE/MAX, I am lookin to change my job with immediate effect, got some direct debits rushing up on me and i'm looking to start earning some cash sharpish.

please... i need a good one NOW so i can buy a scooby before i'm too old and lose my reactions...

Owain Morgans
DOB: 26/08/78

My Personal Profile:
I am a self-motivated, technically minded person, at ease working as a team player or on my own initiative. I thrive on responsibility. I have a flexible mind, and i am good at quickly and effectively solving problems or finding an alternative solution. I am not afraid of hard work, and i am honest and trustworthy. I get on well with colleagues, I am great with customers, and I am good at explaining and getting my point across.

My Skills
I am currently looking to turn my career path around, to go towards the field i would prefer to work in, which is the motor industry. More specifically, i would really be suited to the field of motorsport, be it building servicing or testing equipment/vehicles. I have eight years experience of keeping my own rallycar in action, having done pretty much all of the work on it myself on a very tight budget. This has forced me to be ingenious, and to find ways of fixing things and improving them, rather than just buying a replacement or paying someone else to do it.

Employment History (approx. dates):
July 2003-Present, RE/MAX Estate Agents, Llanelli.
Bringing on and selling properties on a self-employed/commission only basis, creating reports, valuing properties, showing round prospective buyers. The housing market in Llanelli, however, has stalled somewhat... first time buyers cannot afford to buy, and so no-one else can either.

October 2001-July 2003, Halfords Ltd Swansea.
Retail customer assistant, dealing with all normal shop duties, serving customers, training junior members of staff, ordering parts from Head Office or suppliers, chasing up deliveries, dealing with complaints, fitting car audio, roof boxes, speakers etc, and building and repairing bicycles. Creating add-on sales, ensuring maximum sales by correctly establishing the customer's needs.

May 2000-October 2001, Ntl Swansea.
Customer Services and Faults, dealing with complaints, taking account payments, advising customers with problems and calming irate customers. Diagnosing and rectifying faults using online systems. Liasing with other departments when there were problems with installations or main system faults. Offering advice to customers on reducing their bills, and advising on television channel package changes.

November 1997-May 2000, M&P Motorcycle Accessories Swansea.
Telesales and Customer Service assistant, taking telephone orders for motorcycle parts, dealing with complaints, chasing up suppliers and Parcelforce deliveries, training junior members of staff, selling-up customers to higher quality parts and creating add-on sales.

September 1996-November 1997, Sparesworld Ltd Swansea.
Retail Sales Assistant, Similar to Halfords mentioned above, more responsibility with regards carrying out the banking, merchandising stock to optimise sales, e.g. Summer and Winter range changes were carried out on individual store level, fitting audio, dealing with Trade customer accounts and discounted rates.

June 1995-September 1996, West End Garage / Scorpion Motorcycles Llanelli.
Trainee Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Technician, General repairs and service work, engine rebuilds, gearbox changes and rebuilds, dealing with customers, ordering parts, delivering vehicles, prepping for spray painting work. Trained towards GNVQ level 3.

Education and Training:
February 1995-June 1995, Prince's Trust Scheme
A great scheme, aimed at getting young people to work as a team, worked at renovating a home for disabled people, had teambuilding exercises in the freezing Welsh mountains (and rivers) and generally got great experience of pulling together, as you have to do in the world of work.

June 1994-February 1995, Graig College Llanelli
Studied towards A-Level Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths.

September 1989-June 1994, Coedcae Comprehensive School Llanelli
Studied and gained the following GCSE's:
Maths A
Science A
Science A
Technology B
English Literature B
English Language B
Geography B
French C
Welsh C

Hobbies and Interests:
Most of my spare time is spent indulging in something to do with motor sport, working on my rallycar, practicing or competing in motorsport. I've even been known to travel to the Nurburgring racing circuit in Germany for a long driving weekend! I also enjoy going out on the weekend, socialising with my friends and partner Kate, and going to music events in the Summer, work permitting.

Additional Information:
I am able to relocate now for the right job with the right wage to make it viable. I have a full UK driving licence with experience of driving vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. I am the holder of a British passport.

Owain...I'm not an expert with CV's by any means, but I think it looks good...one suggestion would be to leave off the salaries that you earned before. Knowing what you were previously earning might encourage a new employer to offer you the job at a lower rate, offering you enough to think the job is a good move, but still saving them some money.

As to what you could do...something with motorsport ??

Good luck

Owain - first thing that comes over is that the spelling and grammar are correct - a good start as when I have received CVs in the past with huge errors, the sender is unlikely to get an interview.

A bit of your personality also comes over with light-hearted, but not flippant, comments.

Princes Trust experience also looks good.

On the whole, a good CV. Good luck.

Its a good CV Owbow, I agree with removing the salaries, no help to you I think. I would also rewrite the Hobbies bit to delete Kate's disgust and also to avoid it looking as though you might be obsessed with cars etc. even if like the rest of us you are That sometimes doesn't go down so well.

Owbow,

The first paragraph sounds as though you got it out of a book - too many of the "cliches".

Just tell the truth - sounds as though you are a hardworking trustworthy guy.

I like your exam results. Any higher education?

Good luck!

A prospective employer may well ask why you left your previous employment, one thing that always puts me off is when someone sends a cv with a list of jobs where they only stayed a few months,my point bieng.... have the reason why you left well rehearsed and thought through ,good luck, other than that fairly minor point looks like a decent cv

I'd echo the above comments about it being a generally good CV, although I'd also be inclined to leave off the salary info - it's not doing you any favours IMHO. Stating that you're currently on commission is OK.

The only thing that particularly leaps out is that you only started your current job last month. Given that any house sale takes longer than that, I can't help but wonder why you don't stay where you are for a while...

If you need to move, it sounds as though you definitely want to be in motoring. Could you sell cars? Go back to repairing them? Maybe contact a few (dozen) racing teams and see about getting a job with a pit crew?

thanks for all the comments people, yeah the main problem with the job i'm in now is that i've kind of realised that:
A,i have no interest at all in selling houses,
B,it's a damn site easier to say "i can cope for 3 months with no money", than it actually is to cope with having no money for three months... or one for that matter!
C,i've been working in jobs for the money, and only for the money, and it just doesn't work.

i went back to Halfords today, one of the harder things i've done, (i left on good terms but can be stupidly proud sometimes) asked my boss if my job was still there, possibly in October... but i know in my heart it won't work out long term, which is what i'm looking to do now... the long list of jobs on there is starting to look bad... although i've only ever left a job of my own accord.

i'd really fancy a long term career in what i love, motorsport or something in that field... there's courses in 'motorsport engineering' run at my local college but affording one is another issue. guess the best plan is keeping putting my feelers out like this and see if i can get my foot in the door somewhere.

thanks loads again people.

yeah... tell me about it mate.. although she's laid up now i can tell you. bring her out next time i get a payslip i think.

budget's kept pretty tight, total expenditure excluding fuel in the 7 years i've been rallying is probably in the region of £4k.

Have you ever thought of joining one of the Armed Forces? Im in the Army (REME) and the money is not bad. Its not all marching and getting shouted at all the time. Im a vehicle mechanic and currently studing for a HND in mechanical engeneering which the Army is paying for. There are also loads of opportunities to do motor sports in any of the Forces.

that may well be worth a think... to be honest, i'm not hard or anything but i've always kinda fancied the idea of the RAF... one or two of my mates are in and they seem to love it.
my brother was all set to join them and he bu6gered up his knee then he couldn't join up.

how old can you join? i'm 25 in 2 weeks...

I think you can join the Army upto 29. Im not sure about the RAF. Go to your local carrers office(Army RAF & Navy are all together now)As for being hard, thats not the case you just have to have a bit of common sense and if you want a trade you have to have some reasonable exam results. Just go along to the carrers office and have a chat with them. If you want any advice about the Army give me an email and i will try and help you out.

Good luck

Don't join REME they just play with Mecanno all day and blow things up. Ask them to do a HND in joined up writing and they'd all fail (Only kidding you Zulu Warrior.)

Drop the salaries for deffo.
Try trimming some of the short span jobs from the C.V. I am not saying lie, I am saying who cares about three months somewhere.
Try and rephrase out some of the cliches as well

Apart from that it looks ok

SKILLS

You need a section to detail your skills relevant to what you've been doing and are looking to do... put it after your personal info.... make it scream out that what you are applying for is what you've already done.. be specific and make the reader think "this guy could leave his old job friday and start with us monday without a problemo"

Take away the bit on why you didn't do A levels. Just say you studied towards them. Let that be an interview question, rather than getting pre-judged.

Otherwise looks good
