Who would pay extra tax to fund jail time for criminals?
#1
...say an extra 1 or 2 pence in the pound to build some extra jails and start locking people up again like in the' olden days' politicians presume we don't want to pay but i think they're wrong. So,who would gladly pay for this specific scheme?

Do you not think we pay enough in tax already?
Make THEM pay for their stay in prison.
It could be like a student loan thing, where they pay the money after their release.
And for any lifer, execution should be brought in!

A good starting point would be to make convicted (first, second, third time) criminals actually pay their fine in the first place!!!
It seems that almost half don't bother to do so, and the incompetent justice system can't be bothered to chase them up
This is made even worse by the fact that i bet most fines these days are for supposed "speeding", for which yer average law abiding motorist will pay up without fail. Thus the percentage of "real crime" fines that don't get paid will be much much more

I wouldn't, we just need to lock up the right sort of people. Then there wouldn't be an overpopulation problem in prison.

Jail has been generally proved as just a university for criminals. You want to increase that?
I don't know the answer, but I believe community service orders are poorly enforced. I would certainly like to see muggers working in old people's homes being forced to clean the bedpans, and vandals being forced to scrape graffiti off buildings. Two birds with one stone.

Execution doesn't work. The American justice system has proved that.
However, I am interested by this comment:
What a spankingly good idea! Better yet, make prisoners work as everyone else does from 9-5 and teach them marketable skills that might help them get a proper job when they are released, but also take a portion of their salary earned during the prison term to pay for their acommodation, etc...
Keeping people in debt after their release would be wrong. Firstly, the debt may tempt them to return to crime. Secondly, once the jail term is over, they have done their time and ought to have a morally clean slate - a fresh start and the opportunity to turn their lives round.

IMO there is no such thing as a 'spent' conviction. An employer will always wonder where you were for x number of months or years, why not come clean and build the bill for the stay in to you salery?

After execution, these people do not re-offend!
Unfortunately the death penalty will never work in this country with trial by jury as you will never get a jury that will convict.
An interesting discussion I had several years (and beers) back was with an American girl who posed the concept of a mandatory death penalty - death for everything from murder down to littering. Her point was that although there would be a few highly publicised cases of people being put to death for parking on double yelow lines, dropping a cigarette butt. People would soon stop offending. I forget how the arguement went as we were all roaring drunk! (I'm sure she ended up voting republican!)

Crap!

There are many reasons for the way we deal with criminals, and protection isn't the only one. There's punishment, retribution, deterrent, rehabilitation etc... Execution just doesn't work.
It's a topic that gets people fired up, but look at things objectively.

Thanks to the increasingly pathetic sentences dished out, and the hurry to release early in almost every case, THERE IS NO DETERRENT ANYMORE.
That is why each new generation has a higher percentage of pondlife in its ranks ready to ignore the basic principles of society and do what the f*ck they like - with impunity!!!!!

We are being stung for tax already, if they don't sort the crims out and all the other things they should be doing-get shot of the lot of them!

The government get enough money off us at it is. Other countries who pay less taxes than us, and have no problems !!! we r a soft nation when it comes to prisons, and need to wise up. Nowadays prison is not a deterrent. Its more of a holiday camp IMHO of course
