You're in Scotland so why do you need a aircon unit?? btw no offence..Its 37c here in London and the temps are dropping to the mid twenties next week here in the south east and Scotland is going be lower,so i would save your money IMO but of course it could get hotter again and then you wished you bought one

London isn`t as hot as Alcal de Guadaira which is at 108f. Does that mean you`re freezing?

After three summers of being badgered by my wife, I just bought an 8000btu Ariston portable, which appeared to be a rebadged Honeywell. 485 euros, about 300 quid. We live in a loft conversion, and it's hitting 40C in Lisbon, so up yours all you shandy-drinking northern european monkeys
It didn't work in our 40m2 living room (no surprise).
It didn't work in our 20m2 bedroom (eh??)
It only worked in our son's 10m2 bedroom
Took it back and bought a fan for twenty quid.

So Brendon why didn't you go to Makro and buy a proper twin split unit from there instead they are the same price as a mobile one as we looked last year when we were out in Portugal instead of ponsing about with a portable unit that will radiate heat from itself as well !!
HOW TO CALCULATE THE AMOUNT OF COOLING (WATTS/HR) YOU NEED!
The amount of cooling for a particular area is calculated as follows:
Length in M x Breadth in M = Sq M x Factor of 120 =Watts/Hr Cooling required.
(This method is suitable for most situations requiring comfort cooling, however a higher factor of 150 or 180 is needed where additional cooling may be required for extra heat gains e.g. No of people, windows, computers, loft conversions etc.)

Because Huxley (and why didn't you answer my last two enquiries about aircon before I bought it instead of being a wiseguy after the event) I haven't got anywhere to put the exterior part of a split unit as I'm renting a loft conversion with narrow windowsills and no balcony so and to you too, smartass!
(besides, don't you have to be a member of Makro or summat?)
Anyway, I don't care now - booked up to buy a house where I can do what I damn well want! Yippeee!!

Got a 12000 BTU from Homebase for £180 (10% off on Fridays)
Not fantastic, bit noisy but not bad for the £140 I parted with as we had some vouchers.
It is Homebase branded. I also bought a longer hose but this caused the unit to play up.

Had one for a year and they are superb. Turn it on an hour before bed and put it on a timer to stay on for a further hour. In this heat, we often wake up in the night and put it back on. Its quiet enough that we sleep through the noise.
Direct the airstream so that the cold air blows above the bed and sinks down onto you.
