Nothing like a hot spell to bring our the harbringers of doom bleating on about global warming.
I have a couple of questions....
We've only just 'invented' the gadgetery to detect the hole in the ozone layer, so how do we know it hasn't been there all the time?
Over geological history global climate has continuously changed - e.g. the Ice Ages. Why are we suddenly all to blame for this one?
I'm not saying we're not a bit of a contributing factor - but to lay the whole blame on us...? A bit unfair methinks....

We should be promoting global warming, as the first place to get put under water when the polar caps melt is Norfolk.

Ozone hole thingy isn't anything to do with global warming. Ozone hole is related to CFCs and other nasties that are man made.
Global warming is happening, that is a fact. Now, whether global warming is our fault (green house gases etc.) or a natural upward swing in global temperatures is another question. I'm still on the fence and I have seen all the data and all the scientific papers etc.
Cheers
Ian

Have to say, I'm sceptical about global warming being down to human actions. There's clearly climate change happening, but since we measure it over hundreds or thousands of years, that's a blip compared to the average temperatures of the last fifty million. Besides, the temperature of a planet is never going to remain precisely constant, so therefore there must be climate change, in one direction or another.
Having said that, if we can't prove it isn't us, I still think it would be prudent to reduce whatever unnecessary CO2 emission (and other such things) that we can, just to be on the safe side. In financial terms it would be considered 'hedging your position'.

If global warming 'appens at de same rate for de next 10 years, dis country can be as 'ot as it is now in ibiza!
Lets make it 'appen people! Booyakasha!

Now, I am aware that this thread has been started by Drunken Bungle *****, So the need for hard evidence is apparent at an early stage
At the moment I am at work and the hard evidence is at home, so there will be the need to repost this with said facts attached.
However, my wife has a degree in environmental science from Southampton and we have discussed this matter many times over coffee, I also believe Ian`s future wife has the same degree does she not mate?
But the crux of it is thus....
The hole in the ozone has been there all along.
The temperatures are merely following the same cyclical pattern they always have, the hard part is working out where in the cycle we presently sit.
Water density changes quite dramatically at 4 deg.C and therfore when/if polar caps begin melting, when they reach 4deg.C they will become denser and the levels of water will remain (relatively) unchanged.
As stated above, these are as yet unquantified but the evidence is available in many books and paper published by many scientists (just not in my office).
It has all been government/world power spin to try to make us lead better more environmentally friendly lives.
is that such a bad thing tho..?
Peanuts...

And hard facts as well!!

Global warming could be attributed to the shift in the magnetic poles, this happens every few hundred thousand years or so. North becomes south and vice versa. We are in fact well well overdue for a switch. That should cause some other interesting anomolies too.

There is lots of information (and heck, it is even motoring related ) at http://www.abd.org.uk/env.htm.
Maybe start at Q&A

For all the evidence you want to debunk *human caused* global warming take a look at John Dalys site. Shed loads of information, particularly about how it (GW) is being hyped up for *social engineering* purposes. Hell, I remember predictions of the next ice age when I was at school ....

PS: can't get to it as I write but it's not normally down ....

isn't it obvious ???
The Sun has the biggest gravitational pull that we know of ,and were being pulled closer to it all the time. Bound to get a bit hotter me thinks

Mad me a bit mad when watching the ITV news last night. They were discussing the current heatwave and the reporter stated (as a fact) that Global Warming is created by car emissions. So what about Fossil Fule Power stations (worst culprit I think for CO2 emissions), Natrual Gas (heating)...
Here are some figures for 2000...
Millions tones of CO2
35 Road Transport
2 Railways
1 Aircraft
1 Shipping
39 Total
This is 24% of all emissions
109 Non trasport
Source - National Environmental Technology Centre

I don't see how you can dispute global warming.....it says so on the news so must be right
My missus always harps on about climate cycles, sunspot activity (it's such fun living with someone that did astrophysics at uni ) and the fact that we have only been keeping temperature records for about 150 years. In the grand scheme of things that makes us experts doesn't it on the earth's climate over the years

how can the sea level rise when the ice caps melt i am sorely confused.... If you get a pint of water with ice when the ice melts the water level doesnt rise because the weight of the ice lifted it up in the first place...
damn physics and chemistry and everything cleverer than me... this includes my dvd player.

I'm pretty relaxed about whether global warming is real/ mankind induced etc - let's face it, humans are pretty silly and will quickly outbreed available resources/ damage the environment irreversibly (nuclear messes, wiping out animal species) no matter what the weather does. Not worth worrying about - we can play at the edges (reducing CFCs and the like) but .....
time for a beer in the sun, me thinks

Global warming is a natural phenomenon.
It is a known fact that the earth wobbles on it's axis. I'm quite surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. This explaines the ice ages and the fact that the UK was once sub tropical. I can't remember exactly but I think it was 40 thousand years from one extreme to the other.

Loosely on topic but here goes anyway .....
Have a full on 'tree hugger' as a neighbour and she's always marching against some sort of road building or waste dumping project or whatever .. good on her
Anyway......
Last week I was out putting the final touches to the old car wash and polish and happened to be spraying some back to black sort of Aerosol shine thingy over my tyres when she walks out her house and says:
Smiled nicely and agreed
I mean........ In comparison to the 260bhp lump of 1999 metal, running Optimax, booster, dawes and a severe lack of catalytic converters

Nimbus,
That ITV report was utter tosh! Bleeting on about Global warming and saying we almost hit the hottest ever - which was 50 years ago So blimey, so all this Global warming was going on even more 50 years ago, then lulled and its biting back at us again Utter garbage, if its warming so much, how come we still haven't beaten a 50 year old record!

How much CO2 (And Worse) does a volcanic eruption pump out??
How often do volcano's errupt?
I think they should start charging them in relation to their emmissions and let me run my car in piece
I think theres lots of bad things for the environemnt not just us!
Jono
Cant Spell, wont spell

Well, after 15 years and billions of dollars of serious scientific research worldwide, coming to a variety of conclusions and interpretations, thank God scoobynet has solved that issue.
