Question

What are your rights if you buy goods by mail order then decide you don't need them. If they are unused, do you have the right to return them (at your cost) for a refund?

Can you be forced to take credit notes and pay a handling charge???

True, but the government website clearly states that your have

A cooling off period of seven working days in which the consumer can withdraw from the contract;
I didn't think you could be forced to accept a handling charge as well as no refund - just some poncy credit note.

There are some sort of distance selling regulations that specify a cooling-off period.

I can't remember the details though.

I think the distance selling regs give you 14 days cooling off for mail/telephone/internet ordered purchases made on a personal basis (ie they don't cover purchases made on company credit cards).

Distance Selling Regs gives you seven days to inform the company that you are returning the product for a full refund. Simple.

By distance selling we are talking about orders that are placed by any method other than face to face in a store.

See here and here.

Cheers
