Can you Identify this Spider??!!
#1
Anyone know what this is, and what it eats?? One of the lads at work caught it in a sea container that came from Australia.
Biggest spider i've seen not in a tank!
I think its a Huntsman spider, tried feeding it some beetles but it just spat 'em out

Yes, I am from down that way lol and that definitely looks like a Huntsman, entirely harmless, but big *******.
Supposed to be good to have around for eating insects around the house....I have seen a few in the wild, but too close to domestication.....ie.....near the fecking house.
They grow fecking huge, are very flat and often pale, characteristic four front legs are longer than back, often put's them together to look like it has 6 legs - insect imitation I think.
<shudders>
Do a search on Google for Huntsman Spider.....
<shudders again and runs from thread>
That's all you're getting out of me, I fecking hate spiders.

funny thing about Huntsman spiders is they have a penchant for crawling into cars and hiding behind the sunvisor or elsewhere and as soon as the occupants adjusts his visor ir drops in his lap. ?????.
Apparently there have been more than a couple of motor car accidents/fatalities attributed to this.
Made me look behind my sunvisor every time i drove off in the hire car at the very least
Oh and where's Katana and the camel spider when you need him

You're mean, really mean!!!!
Sometimes I am not sure how I make it through the day without having a heart attack at the thought of the monstrous creatures waiting to kill me.
I'll be driving around with my eyes shut soon just in case.

oh by the way have you visited Tasmania yet
I was sat in a B+B not far from Hobart and i picked up a book about poisonuos reptiles etc (yes i KNOW NOW silly thing to do) and apparently there are NO non poisonous snakes in tasmania.
Up to that point i had been quite blase about the hideous and poisonous snakes and spiders and jelly fish and sharks and.........
(Remember this is where YOU are Living Michelle) but after that i became quite paranoid for a few days.
while I was out there a life guard managed to swallow some box jellyfish tentacles somone had thoughtfully decided to store in a fridge in a bottle of water!!!!!!!!
He lived just.

Scorpions, snakes? Pah, I can deal with them! I have a lot of respect for the venemous ones of course, but I am not particularly scared of them........
The spiders however, I am just not getting used to. My fear is getting worse because I know I have some slight validation of my fears with the varieties such as the funnel web and redback - of which there are several quite happily nesting around the outside of the house!!!
It's a great place to live, but not doing much for my blood pressure, adrenaline levels and heart.

I think the red backs are the biggest menace as they are quite keen on living under and around houses they are supposed to present quite a serious threat to kids and the elderly/infirmed.
I heard a story about a nest of them under a kids bycicle saddle !!!! and he had been cycling to school and back several times before thay were found !!!!

Tell me about it!!!
I am going to be purchasing a mountain bike very soon and am wondering where the hell to put it!!!! The only real safe place is going to be in the house!!!!
At least my brother has been able to say that he has seen a real Redback, Funnel Web and Huntsman whilst he is out here......as for me, I am unfortunate enough to see them nearly every day.
It's like running the gauntlet at times......

Ahhh, heard about the needle thing on Bondi - unfortunately it is a problem there.
Nevertheless, there are countless other beaches that are less commercial that you can visit.......Palm Beach is quite a good one because there are some great rocks for some cracking water spray shots - ChrisB knows all about them because I have bored him to death with my efforts......he now cringes at anything water related.
