I had to do that once, government red tape meant I wasn't allowed to apply for my own job yet had to train the person they hired to replace me. He didn't get trained very well actually and I was pretty peeved :|

I'm a contractor here, I was brought in on a contract to perm agreement, which they started but didn't finish back in Aug 2001.
Was kinda hoping it would be revisited now the markets are picking up..

Alex,
Try not to worry about it, try and make it fun!
Will it long phone calls to India? If so, make them at odd hours (Indian time, not UK time - That wouldn't be fun!), or very long and run up a phone bill for them to remember!!
If they are coming over, then I'm sure some of the training can be conducted in a quiet... pub-like environment! (make them or the company pay!)
BTW how's the job hunting going? (I thought something fantastic was in the pipeline) I still intregate any agency that calls up here about UNIX jobs!
Shame you couldn't make Saturday, you were missed!
If you want a beer, a chat, a game night, you know where to find me!

Cheers guys.
Something is potentially in the pipe-line, but this could be scuppered by the T&Cs they sneaked in the contract before last.
In addition the negotiations for the other oportunity *seem* to be taking a turn for the worse anyhow... but this could just be the agency being cautious...
Andy T - Cheers mate, I am so sorry about Saturday, as Milly will have told you I spent the whole day and up to the evening in the office.. then got called out again during the night and the next morning, was a gibbering wreck on Sunday.
Steven - thanks mate, will do.
Paul - Yep, got hold of Gairn. Thanks again for your help.
Richard - yeah, I would be, but I'll will have to try for Wednesday next week, work load permitting, I'll give you a call mate.

Keep your chin up mate, something will turn up - always does for overpaid people like you
Just make sure that you line up some time off between jobs, if they ever let you out. There is nothing worse than dragging these things out and that's just what they seem to be doing.
Mike

So is your position actually being made "redundant" if somebody else in India is going to do it? Does redundancy cover relocation of the position?
****ty news BTW, I had the same thing 3 years ago.

As a contactor , you can walk away at anytime so the handcuffs about staying to show him the ropes is bull, unless of course part of your original contract that you signed said you would??
Best advice would be to find something else pronto and leave without training anybody??
I would be tempted, even if i signed to say i would, just walk away without training afterall, the company would have had no problems getting rid of you had the circumstances been different. Isn`t that the joys of being contract? You charge more than everyone else per day but you can be gone tomorrow!
Obviously its in your best interests o get as much money out of it as you can also, so a very slow training programme ie 18months could be outlined??? At the end of the day, if they expect you to train someone and its in your contract that you will, then its up to you to decide when the training is complete.
Just a couple of options i would look at depending on how the company had treated me etc etc.

Thanks Ian & Rich.
jasabz - fortunately the contract T&Cs are now sorted, it was more to do with the termination rights. However, no where does it state training anyone.
Now.. just waiting to hear if the oportunity has disappeared or is going to be confirmed as a job offer.
fingers crossed..

So here's the thought. Within this community are dozens of IT people - many of them contracting or out of work. These people are scattered accross the whole country.
Is there no way you could all link together and offer a national low cost IT support network? (Low cost compared to having in house team for a small company).
One central number, a network of mobiles and away you go. Call comes in from Birmingham - gets routed to nearest available chappy.
Just need someone to head it up.

Cheers all.
Anna - I may be intouch if I don't get anywhere with the current oportunity.
Nikko2 - I didn't think we (contractors) had any rights at all.

it's not all bad...
july 1st i learned that around 50% of our workforce was being made redundant (around 240 people), there was a high probability i would be one of them (IT technician) .
So i start job hunting and by july 19th or so the only job i could find was an IT support contract for 6 weeks. Not ideal but better than nothing.
But then last week i had the shock of my life when i learnt that i was to be offered the position of software developer and network services technician , dream job, i think they'd noticed from web history all of the nerdy programming sites i'd been visiting in addition to scoobynet . The existing developer is being made redundant, he knew his stuff but had 0% dedication.
So there u go, wot a month, redundancy, split up with g/f after 4.5 yrs, then dream job and a foot in the software development ladder.
Just shows how quickly things can change.

Sorry to here this mate.
I'm still having no luck on the job front ether, hopefully it will pick up after the holiday season is over.
Have also forwarded on a load of post for you both.
And today the rest of my team are moving to our other building in Woking apart from me, I have to stay here and decommission the network here and then I'm out of a job, at lease I'm now 3 miles from my manager instead of 3 feet.
Funny thing is when I spoke to HR about my redundancy they said no one from IT is being made redundant, made my manager very clear about how unhappy I was about that and so did HR.
Try and chill out and I'll talk to you soon.

Alex,
I'm sure Caroline spoke to you about your rights!
I think there was something passed at the begining of the year, which basically gives temporary/contract workers the same right as permanent staff!
Trust her, she has to deal with these sorts of queries all the time as part of her "compensation and benefits" role!
Cheers
Andy

ChrisB, yes you're correct, you can't replace someone who is being made redundant, so in effect he was booted...but the official line is 'redundant', I should have explained it a bit better...
5 of us in the IT dept were given notice of redundancy, including the software developer, although his job title like the rest of us was IT technician. At the same time, two new vacancies were created, one of them being Software Developer.
Several of us applied for the position including the lad who'd been doing all the development. We all assumed it was a done deal. I did, to the extent I'd already lined another job up!
I even took a holiday on the day of the 1st interviews! Then i got a phonecall saying that'd i'd been assessed as best candidate for the job in my absence! Wow!
So yes you're right, he was booted, but in a legal way.
