Quick question about these things just on the off chance anyone here knows about them....
Basically can I record MP3 tracks onto MDs like you can with CDs? Can I put 4 or 5 albums onto one MD in MP3 format?
Are they any good?
Sony website is a bit of a chocolate fireguard when it comes to explaining what the f it is the things actually do...

Yeah you can get about 300 mins of music on one MD but obviously the quality won't be A1, but you won't notice it through headphones anyways.
If you do buy one, deffo get an extended warrenty cause I manage to break mine at least once a year (but that might just be me) & it also means you can get the newest model when yours does break.

ChrisB, how is the iPod not in the same sector, except maybe pricewise. The man wants to be able to store MP3s on a portable device for mobile replay. The iPod may add other features such as calendar/diary, address book, games, clock, HD storage, but it is/was primarily a music replay machine. It's just a damn good one with a little more to offer. So there.

Biggest problem I found with the NetMD stuff is that whilst you can upload MP3s onto an MD, and play 'em on the move, you can't take stuff from an MD and download it to your PC. So if I go to a live gig with my recordable MD player, I can't make (personaly, obviously ) bootlegs. I also can't upload MP3s onto the player using my work 'net connection, and download them back onto my PC later that evening.
Once I realised this limitation, I took mine back to the shop.
There's a big web campaign with a petition you can sign somewhere which people are trying to use to persuade Sony to enable this feature (it's only a software restriction, apparently).
Have to say, iPod (or similar) is definitely much preferable. The solid state MP3 players are the best way to go, frankly, 'even if the storage is slightly more limited at the moment.

Ooo, temper, temper.
Example Sony Net MD
36.4 x 48.5 x 18.0 (mm)
Main unit: 54g (with embedded Ni-MH battery)
Example Apple iPod
104 x 61 x 15.7mm
156g
An iPod is jukebox type device - excellent for storing 000s of tracks but in a different class (market segment) to the Net MD and other 'micro' MP3 players. The 'man' may indeed wish to store music for replay, but looking at a Net MD would suggest size and weight are more important than pure storage capacity.
My MP3 player beats the Net MD hands down for size : 88 x 29 x 23mm (w x h x d) and weight : 29g An iPod is five times heavier than that ie crap for using whilst out running or at the gym (unless you like 'hello sailor' comments that is).

Don't see why not as Sony DAT players were the dogs for this.
I have a MZ-N1 which is long play (MDLP), an x-plod top of the range MDLP head unit in the car and an MDS-JE440 linked up to my Sony WEGA system in the house.
All magic peices of kit and cannot fault them at all.

Gentlemen gentlemen! Please, no fighting!
Thanks for the replies. In my capacity as the "man" (cool ) I must say I have been looking at the 15Gb Ipod but I'm trying to decide which would suit me best. I travel a hell of alot and want be able to take my music with me - Ipod seems good. I go to the gym a lot - MD is better. I don't have that much music I want to carry around - MD seems to be the better choice again....
Decisions, decisions Thanks for the input though!

Around November, you'll see a new mpio player at www.ihavetohave.it which uses a 1" 1.5GB HD. This will be around zippo lighter size. IMHO, 1.5GB this year implies 3GB+ some time next year. I think that this drive technology will start to hurt the iPod. Delightful as the iPod is, it's still too big and precious for the gym. Again IMHO.
FL100 is available in 2-3 weeks with 512MB base memory and SD/MMC expansion.
