apparently they overweight the tyre and can cause valve failure

Did you have the "neon" car accessories craze a few years back? Not real neon, but flourescent colors on wipers, wheel covers, etc. It was horrible here until the fad ended.

Why not get a 3mt flag pole with a yellow flag and bolt it to the car that would get you noticed or better still one of these big pointing fingers

Problem with valve failure is true apparently.
They been around for a while...I read about them in a motorbike mag around Xmas. Quote was "fastest way to the mortuary". Something to do with the extra weight being too much at speed, valve fails, loose control, crash,....
