track day crash helmet

IMHO "cheap" and "Crash helmet" should not be used in the same sentence.
This is an essential piece of equipment.
How much do you value your life?
Will you use the savings you make on your funeral?
Jason.

Go down to a bike shop and buy a last yrs helmet (mainly cosmetic) which was sold at £350-450 new but now is being sold for £150 as it has been discontinued.
You then know you head is safe and you got real value for money!
Arai, AGV, Schoe (sp?) are all good makes.

btw most helmets that are up to standard for track day use are around £150 anyway....
As said earlier... cheap and crash helmet should not be in the same sentance.
Also go for a full helmet not open faced.... you never know when you might need it again and for what....
I bought mine for track day use... now I use it for Go-Karting.
Spend your money wisely... but last years model is the way to go..... generally only a visual pattern change...

All the helmets sold in the UK are BS tested - if the helmet was ****, then it wouldnt pass.
My helmet is cheap/cheerful, but its only a BS label job - without the racing federation endorsement (the gold sticker) A good good helmet will have this gold sticker or be 'race approved'

So why is it that the research I have recently been involved in has shown that some of the cheaper helmets are actually better than some of the dearer helmets?
The price of the helmet is imaterial, what is most important is the fit, and something like 60% of helmets used onthe road (I am talking motorcyclists) are the wrong size for the wearer. All helmets used on the road ust conform to either BS6658-85 or the new European standard EC22/05 and the level of protection will be the same no matter whether it cost £400 or £40.
What you get with the dearer helmets is better features, plusher interiors extra gimmicks or fancy paintwork, and in some cases more expensive materials, but the overall level of protection remains constant provided it fits right.
The ACU Gold stamp is just another certification badge that avoids the need for it to be issued with a sticker at the track, but most helmets actually come with this certification already in place.

Biker Phrase :-
Only use a £50 Crash Helmet if you have a £50 Head.
How much is yours worth ?

Keep them coming guys. Seems like I need to ensure a)meets uk or eu standards and b) fits properly. The cost is irrelevant?

Full face and you can wear it go-karting as they don't let you wear open face helmets these days.
I have a full faced Cromwell with all the ness. stickers and fire proof lining. (just in case my cigar falls out my mouth at a blind corner taken in top!!!)

I have been to track days where they insisted it was full faced and approved. I got one from Demon Tweeks on an offer which was plain and fairly cheap (~£100), but which has BS 2841390, British motorcycle sport ACu approval, and RAC international motorsport approval. Variety ofsizes, having a big head mine is 620-630mm!

yep - always go for full face - 1/ in event of fire, unless you wear a nomex balaclava 2/ in event of frontal crash a ff helmet will protect your jaw/face far better as it mashes on the steering wheel (with the increased momentum due to helmet weight)...

Have to agree with TC (damn! ) Fit is more important than the wonga you throw in.
I really wanted a Shark lid, but they just didn't fit my head!!
But am now more than happy with me Shoei.
