Might buy a bike soon for my son, but it doesn't have disc brakes, which he covets. Normally they seem to be £150+ new, which a jobless 15 yr old has no hope of saving, but I've seen people talking about them for £50 s/h on mtbr.com.

Now:
1. I know NOTHING about ebay (does this make me a philistine?)
2. I know I'm in Portugal, but still, we're coming to the UK (Sussex) for 3 weeks over summer.
So;
3. Where's the best place in UK? Exchange and Mart? Loot? Friday-Ad? Any websites, either specialist or general?

I'd expect to get bits where someone has upgraded whatever set they have for some better ones.

Problem with doing that is you would need to buy new hubs and get the wheels rebuilt as well, whilst ensuring that your forks were disc compatible (2 holes protruding from front of fork leg)

Will end up a costly business I'm afraid

ie. hubs around £50 each. wheel rebuild £30 per wheel. Plus cost of brakes

I think I'm aware of that already - mounts on fork are behind it, not in front, surely? - and am vaguely prepared. My logic is that he buys a bike now with basic hubs (rather than the one with non-disc Deore hubs offered) so it doesn't matter that he chucks them. He can then upgrade to nice hubs as and when, and we can build the wheels ourselves - I've built 10 or more myself, though 15 yrs ago now! We were expecting to spend an extra €170 (£110?) on a bike to get the discs, (HardRock Pro) but now it's been sold, with no more coming. Bad news is he doesn't get them, good news is he effectively has €170 to count towards the upgrades.

I just can't see another bike round here that is the same value as this HardRock Comp for €515 (£360) with the upgrade potential. I can get something with discs, but then the forks are shyte, and they ain't cheap to upgrade also. I just want to give him hope that he doesn't have to pay full new adult price for components, as you highly paid IT bods are selling off your "crappy" Deores for peanuts to upgrade to XTRs. Just need to find out WHERE!

Trouble is, I think he's now going to sulk and refuse to have ANY bike, rather than having one which has "rubbish" normal brakes . I know it's a big disappointment, but... <sigh>

i can't see you getting any cheap xtr bits !! if i were you i would go for xt , very good bits for half the price of xtr . it also depends what discs you want , there's hydraulic or the cheaper cable discs , much cheaper and they look the part as far as a fussy lad is concerned !!

Try here. Paul will be able to sort you out with most parts (and even bikes) and his prices are reasonable. He does mail order for both new and s/h parts.

If he gives you any trouble, let me know, I'll go up (about 2 miles away) and sort him out

PS: I have Hope XC discs on my bike, and my son, who's into trials, has Hope ??????stronger/bigger ones on his Orange ZerO frame, and both are excellent ONCE YOU GET THEM SET UP. Fiddly doesn't even start to describe it!
