Question

I'd be really grateful if any of you can offer some advice on the following :

-I've just imported a car from Japan, obviously there's no UK reg plate on it, so I gather that a reg plate is not essential for a UK MOT meaning that the MOT certificate won't have a registration on it, correct ?

-In order to get a reg plate on it, I need several forms, of which i have most, apart from the MOT (see above) and 'customs and excise' forms. Now I have paid my import tax and VAT, otherwise I'd could not have collected it from the port, but I haven't received anything directly from 'customs'? Should I be expecting anything from them?

Any help/advice really appreciated....

You can MOT It no problem without a reg number, the tester will write "Not Displayed" where the reg number should go. When you register it DVLA will stamp it and write the reg number on it. If its under 10 years old it will need an SVA test first and you will need a C&E389 form stamped and signed from customs and excise to prove that duty etc have been paid, DVLA will not register it without one.

Thumbs up

thanks Les, it's older than 10 yrs so no SVA required. I guess I'll be on the phone tomorrow to C&E or to Liverpool Freeport (who arranged the C&E payment), for the completed 389 form as required.

Thanks again

Nice

Was it a big saving against a comparable UK car?

Yes but sorry I'm not going to reveal just how much ....BUT it was alot of messing about and it's still not road legal yet.

It's a really clean car. I was a bit nervous as to what it'd be like condition wise, the seller had mentioned the odd body defect......I had no need to worry, the car is better than 90% of the uk 300zx's I've seen. The 'defects' are practically nothing. Why can't most british sellers be as honest ?

I had a giggle tonight from it , it came with a mini disc player and a 10 disk cd changer (which was a total surprise!) and it had some really mad tunes in the mini-disc...I just got this mental image of a mid 40s japanese guy cruising around tokyo with some extremely funky jazz blaring out of the sound system ..ah well it made me laf anyway .

Oh it also has some expensive deep dish alloys, good tyres, again a suprise. Yes I'm buying from there again .

No, not at all! But you know the score...

If someone knows how much you paid for something, then they'll use that against you when trying to agree a price. Obviously I'll sell it eventually....all cars will come and go...but I'm confident I'll get my money back even if I keep a good while, which I intend to do so. As long as I dont lose on it I'll be happy .

ps it wasn't a BIG saving by any means, just enough for a few nice modes i.e. chip/intake/exhaust for 400bhp!
