Shared drive,problems with neighbours!!
Can somebody please give me some advice on what to do with the following dilema. I have a house with a shared driveway but the owners of the other property have not lived there for about 10 years. Last year they left an old car on their side of the drive which means i have to leave the scoob at the end of the drive running, while i go and unlock my garage. This makes me feel uneasy as you can imagine, leaving my pride and joy there running for anybody to drive off in.
Does anybody know if the council can do anything or shall I leave them a note saying i'm having my half of the drive re done and if they don't want their car damaging by a 3 tonne digger would they kindly shift it.
I have had a few run ins with these "neighbours" even though they don't actually live there so i'm not counting on their goodwill and shifting it themselves might i add.
Thanks in advance

Can't advise on this particular situation apart from you might just have to wait and switch your engine off before going to the garage just to make sure the motor is safe.
All I know is I used to have a shared driveway too and it was a total hell hole that involved lots of nasty arguments between me and all the neighbours, 4 of us shared it leading to ur respective garages. I will never own another property again that has a shared driveway as my flat is the same now and it causes problems at this place too. I am always blocked in and it drives me mad. People are so ******* inconsiderate when they park across your area and block you in and stop you from going out
Shared driveways, stay well clear of them when ever buying a property in my bad experiences!

i dont understand why you cant still drive to your garage, if their car is there, on their side.
if you get your car into the garage, does this not mean the driveway is clear???

there was another thread on this nighmare scenario a few months back...

Sorry I dont understand.
If you have a shared drive, and there is a car parked on it surely you have to move it to get past, please explain as Im a bit fick.
PS. Never leave your car running unattended, try explaining this to your insurance if it goes west. In fact I would be surprised if they would pay you out.

From: Casualty or Holby City, Take your pick, it's not like that in real life!!
I'll never, ever buy another house with a shared driveway again!! It's a nightmare and I hate my neighbours for how they park!! Shame cause they did seem quite pleasent!!!!
God knows what you can do

Thanks for the responses guys,
Beemerboy, it's a bit tricky to explain but here goes - if I reverse close to my garage then their isn't room to get out of my car because of their car and my house. If I reverse right up to the garage where i can get out, there isn't room to open the garage door so I have to leave it at the end of the drive.
I agree with the posts about switching the engine off, locking the car, opening the garage door, unlocking the car, starting it again, reversing into the garage, locking the car but this isn't doing my car any good.
Dr Hu - have thought about this but the car in question is an old "vintage" Rover 100 and is in need of a major restoration and probably hasn't run for 25 years and would need towing away.
Again thanks for the replys but does anyone know if I could get the car legally removed ie. council?
Will never buy a property with a shared driveway again!!

Nimbus, im not very good on computers so i can't draw a diagram, but if i explain that the drive is wide enough for 2 cars (just) and there are 2 garages at the bottom this might help a bit.
Again, thanks for the advice but i'm on the works computer at the mo, and the buzzer is about to go so i won't be able to reply till monday, but PLEASE keep em comin
Thanks

...to answer the original question, no, there's nothing the Council can do as it's on private land
However, if your neighbours are ever causing an obstruction, I think the police might be able to help?
Not sure though, maybe the same private land thing applies - maybe one of the 5ive-o guys might be able to help?

If the tax disc is out of date (cos its been there about a year) and they havent filled in a SORN declaration then the car is liable to be towed away and impounded if someone were *careless* enough to let the authorities know.
I think the legal phrase that applies here is "tough".
If they're on their own side of the drive, there's sod all you can do about it IMHO. OK, so it causes you inconvenience but they're not doing anything wrong.
If the boot was on the other foot, would you move the car to help a neighbour that you don't get on with?
Sorry mate, I'd get used to turning the engine off

Get 2 trolley jacks.Put one under each end of the car(find out where the jacking points are first or you're likely to go through the floor),raise it off the ground and push it sideways as close to their their property as possible.Might give you enough room to open your door then.
Edited to add I'd love to see their faces when the car has mysteriously moved.Clean up the messy patch on the drive that was around the car too and they may not even notice.
