Just downloaded some Dire Straights MP3's and listened to them, havent heard anything by them for about ten years but heard a neighbour cruising down the road with it blaring out, I though, Sad Muppet but he left it running on the path and I quite enjoyed it, I am officially saying it's ok to like Dire Straights again, really nice after listening to all the **** on radio one all the way home, 50 Cent, f*ckin ell wouldnt give you that much for him.

Go and download Sultans of Swing, its great.

I am 32 by the way so allowances should be made for the above.

Some good tunes.

I play it quite low when the windows are down!

So Far Away From Me is a top tune

They're pretty good.

I think I'm lucky in the sense that I've never based my musical tastes on what is, or what isn't cool.

Radio1 is just a pile of shíte though

Nothing wrong with Dire Straits.

Sad thing is Knopfler probably wouldn't even get signed today, maingly because he's as ugly as a spud and an extremely talented musician. The complete opposite of what is required these days.

Cool

Sultans of Swing (the album) has been on my WinAmp play list a lot at night recently.

Great mix of chilled and upbeat tunes.

Theo - wasnt it you that did the music to one of johnfelsteads ring video with Nothing Else Matters? That was some cracking music - would love to hear some of your other stuff if you have it online?

I personally like Walk of Life and Six Blade Knife (used in the film Desperado with Antonio Banderas).

Simon.

I still regularly watch my VHS copy of Dire Straits Live in 85 from Wembely Arena recorded off Channel 4. Has Nils Lofgren and Hank Marvin as guests and the adverts are great (Levi's ad where he takes his pants off in the laundrette, anyone?)

Mark Knopfler inspired me to pick up a guitar and get into rock music. Pity he couldn't teach how to play, though

Every DS song is excellent, except Twisting by the Pool which should be deleted from their back catalogue and erased from our memories.

But Tunnel of Love is the best song ever!

Rev

Great call mate Tunnel of Love Great album as well Making Movies. The Live at Wembley version was awesome, long winding into and extended. Even the vidoes clips they showed of the black a white 60's travelling fair, brilliant.
If Springsteen had written Tunnel of Love it would have been hailed as an all time great along with Born to Run

Getting crazy on the waltzers but it's the life that I choose
sing about the sixblade sing about the switchback and a torture tattoo
and I been riding on a ghost train where the cars they scream and slam
and I don't know where I'll be tonight but I'd always tell you where I am

In a screaming ring of faces I seen her standing in the light
she had a ticket for the races just like me she was a victim of the night
I put a hand upon the lever said let it rock and let it roll
I had the one arm bandit fever there was an arrow through my heart and my soul

and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and I'm just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love

it's just the danger when you're riding at your own risk
she said you are the perfect stranger she said baby let's keep it like this
it's just a cake walk twisting baby step right up and say
hey mister give me two give me two cos any two can play

and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and I'm just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love

well it's been money for muscle another whirligig
money for muscle and another girl I dig
another hustle just to make it big
and rockaway rockaway

and girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids

she took off a silver locket she said remember me by this
she put her hand in my pocket I got a keepsake and a kiss
and in the roar of the dust and diesel I stood and watched her walk away
I could have caught up with her easy enough but something must have made me
stay

and the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above
and I'm just high on the world
come on and take a low ride with me girl
on the tunnel of love

and now I'm searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
in any shooting gallery where promises are made
to rockaway rockaway from cullercoats and whitley bay out to rockaway

and girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids
girl it looks so pretty to me like it always did
like the spanish city to me when we were kids

Must be on an 80's thing at the mo, we bought Ferris Buellers day off on video and watched it the other night, dead cheesey but some good moments.

I think its cos life is complicated at the mo (work, kids, atkins, exams cars, bike tests etc etc) I am trying to hark back to a simpler time, nothing like going round next door in the summer holidays to watch videos (we didnt have a video), first go to the offy and stock up on junk food and then spend all day watching crap 80's B movies (mainly horror)

Wonderful !

I was a big fan of DS all through my teenage years - you really can't beat 'Telegraph Road' - begs to be played loudly on a good hi-fi - or in the car late at night. So powerful... Private Investigations is cool 2 - the album IMHO is ruined by Industrial disease, so not 'of the album'.

I listened to an interview with him a few years ago looking back over his career, he basically hates everything he's ever written up until he started The Notting Hillbillies. He especially hates Telegraph Road with a passion, which is odd as most people see this track as their peak.

The Notting Hillbillies stuff is nice & relaxed,. His album last year 'Sailing to Philalpelhia' is an absolute corker too.... Sweet tracks on there, espcially the title track and Raceway at Nazareth.

Funny but I really don't like their most commercial tracks eg: Money for Nothing (HATE HATE HATE!), Walk of Life, etc etc

Can't beat the fingerpickin tunes.... He was knocked off his m-bike in central london a few months ago and was quite badly injured - his arm & collarbone - not good when you play a guitar for a living...

He's also a mad car nut - has a Atom superbike engined car thing - sweeet

...six lanes of traffic, three lanes moving slow

Prefer "Private Investigations" myself, or perhaps "Down to the Waterline" (from "Dire Straits") or "You and Your Friend" from the last album ("On Every Street")

I think I have them all, except "Brothers In Arms"

Guilty indeed, ta

Don't have much stuff online at the moment, but will get my behind in gear and move some studio stuff to mp3/net one of these days

Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, all great songs. I'm with Dr Hu though in that I didn't really like the more "commercial" songs.

It's one of those bands from which I'd *love* to see a "15 years later" style documentary.

I believe 15 yrs later he is famous for addressing forums on financial investments. Or at least, 10 yrs later. I thought he dabbled in fast cars but was as successful as that other guy from Wham! so gave up, at least as a main occupation.

Sorry, the advantage of moving to the other side of the planet in the 90s, I didn't realise they'd become uncool, I still listen to them frequently.

I agree Dr Hu, Telegraph Road is a classic, as is the rest of Love Over Gold, except Indusrial Disease.

An okay song if you're in the mood for it, but it just don't fit the album....
