1st Lotus airfield training
#1
Has anyone attended one of the Airfield training days at 1st Lotus...Im interested in getting a few friends together for a day out ( 3 scoobs and vx220 ) and just want to hear peoples views on the format, what general techniques they teach by default, how much hands on ( or foot in ) training you get with 4 people, do you get to practise in your own cars etc..
thanks in advance

You only use your own cars !
Andrew Walsh is an excellent instructor and you get plenty of time behind the wheel.
It's heavy on tyres though - the outside edges of my fronts were completely wrecked and that was running them at 40psi !!!
It's a good day out and well worth the money IMHO.

I'm going with Paul on Monday, so as he says, we'll let you know
There were a couple of threads on this a while back which I looked at before we booked it up and they gave good feedback .
If you do a search i'm sure you'll find it

Just a report back from Monday, we all thought it was an excellent day. Learnt some techniques which are pretty alien at first but once you get the hang of it it all fits together. Certainly would recommend this day to anyone who would like to have a little tuition before going to a full on trackday. I have some pictures to upload if someone could point me in the direction of an uploader.

hi all,
i saw the thread and thought i would add my own experiences, which have been excellent. I've been twice, first in March this year and second was yesterday, thursday 10th.
I would agree with the comments above, Andy is an excellent teacher and an even better driver especially when he shows you how it should be done. You go along to something like this and realise how "average" a driver (speaking for myself of course) many of us are and that some are just leagues above us.
There were two lotus elises and a vx220 turbo with me yesterday.
The first time i went it was heavy on the front tyres which needed replacing immediately afterwards due to damage to the side walls but tread was just about still ok. However these were the original Potenza SO2s which seemed to be a bit soft.
Second time around the front tyres were Pirelli P6000. I was a bit more "tyre" friendly and probably only took a few mm off the tread, not significant. It's up to you but check your tyres frequently for signs of wear and maybe take it easy with practice on your own in between exercises, especially (i think) with the slip angle circle exercises. But don't let this affect the day, enjoy it don't worry too much about tyres.
No brake problems either time, original Subaru brakes no mods - not sure why others have had problems?
enjoy, cheers,

Excellent day out, will make you realise your owm limits and your cars. Yes its a bit hard on the tyres etc, but worth it as some of the stuff he can teach you could save a lot of money in the long run.
usually the format is 4 cars at a cost of approx £110 each take it in turns to run through various exercises, inc how to turn a right angle at 80mph! (you have to go to know what I mean)
mucho smoke and spinning for fun.
All in the safety of an Airfield in Essex (North Weald)
If you are lucky there will be a selection of cars/people and you can blag px laps in their cars for fun too later on.
Andy is from Wales he is very patient and not a lot will suprise him. See if you can get him to take you to the pub after (if he has time) buy him a beer and he will be able to tell you some interesting stories
