The following information was in my local paper, in the motoring section (and under an article promoting NavTrak). However, the information is based on Home Office statistics, so should be pukka.
There were 330,000 "reported theft of a vehicle" cases in 2002.
Just over 51,000 cases were dealt with by official police action.
Only 44,000 cases made it to court, and 18,000 of these cases saw charges changed or dismissed or proceeding discontinued.
Only 22,912 thieves were found guilty.
Of these, 4,111 were "locked up" (with 2,353 going to prison and 1,758 to a young offenders institution).
However, almost 58% (1,362) of those going to prison and 61% (1,082) of young offenders were sentenced for less than three months
Of those that got off with a fine, over 65% paid less than GBP100
Who says that crime doesn't pay

Makes you feel quite ill, that these people can just get away with it..
You cant even blame the police really, if only 10% are going to prison, then why should they bother? Most of the 90% that walk away probably go out and do it again anyway

One of the more depressing things about those figures is that of the 22,912 found guilty - over half (22912-4111*65%=12221) were fined less than GBP100!!
I bet that the insurance excess for most people (let alone Scoobies) will be more than that
