got most of my hayfever under control now - no sneezing, itchy eyes etc. but cant get rid of the runny bunged up nose.

i have tried otrivine(xylometazoline)which works brilliantly but have been advised against this for long term use.

how long is long term?

incidently i have noticed that i you are not supposed to use beconase continuosly for more than a month without seeing your gp if the symptoms persist.

cheers
colin

I have been prescribed Flixonase spray, but I thought I saw an ad on TV the other week which gave me the impression that it can be bought over the counter.

Dont know about Flixonase but I was on Becanase for about 6 months then just stopped taking it.For about a week afterwards I had the most horrendous headaches. Went to my Doc who told me I had to come off it gradually. Went back on it same day and was OK.

apparently that is called "rebound" and is a common side effect of staying on these things too long. whats the use of making medications to cure a chronic problem if you cant use them for as long as you have the complaint.

Know a wee bit about drugs, got a pharmacology degree

The worst that will happen with nasal sprays (I think) is that you will lose your sense of smell!!!

I use a combination of Piriteze one a day allergy tablets and Tesco's nasal spray (cheaper than Beconase, same job). Works a treat, live in Oxfordshire, one of the worst places for hayfever and am less bunged up than I am usually over winter!

Hope that helps

Jim
