Just read this on the times website in their "my first crash" feature

"In September last year I was driving down the M40 towards Birmingham in the early hours of a Saturday morning. There are no lights there. Pitch black. Nothing on the road and I thought I’d call in at Warwick services to have a cup of tea.
I was doing about 65mph in the middle lane.
Suddenly this stationary abandoned car loomed up at breathtaking speed. I went straight into the back of it.
The front of my 7-series BMW disintegrated before my eyes. The airbag came out and I had no control whatsoever. I had visions of headlines like “Rock musician killed in motorway horror!” Then, amazingly, my car slowed to a halt. There was smoke to my left. I don’t know how I got out but I did.
It was pitch black, freezing and I was really shaken up. There was blood in my mouth. Then a car came out of the darkness and went into the back of my car. A family got out and I called them over to the side of the road.
Then there was an almighty crunch and flying towards us was the remains of the car I had hit which had now been hit by a lorry.
I thought, “This is ridiculous, I’ve survived the car crash and now I’m going to be hit by the same car again!” We dived out of the way. Seconds later the emergency services arrived.
They wanted me to go to the hospital but on Monday I had to fly to America to start the second leg of a 30-date tour. A lot of people were depending on me. I signed a document stating that I refused to go to hospital. The paramedic was really helpful. He had to go back via Liverpool airport and dropped me off. I flew home to the Isle of Man and on Monday I flew to America. For the first week I was nearly crying with agony on stage.
Rick Wakeman is most famous for playing keyboards in Yes"
Perhaps that will teach the d1ckhead to pay attention to his lane discipline. Nothing worse than ******** who drive in the middle lane for their entire journey. Reading between the lines he was probably half asleep and paying no attention to what was going on around him- like all the other morons who seem to be stuck in the middle lane.

No condoning middle lane hogging or anything but, him crashing into the back of a stationery car has nothing to do with him being in the middle land. He could have been in the bottom lane and the stationery car might have been there. I do agree middle lane hogging is bloody annoying though.
P.S. never heard of the guy who is he??

If he had been where he should have in the inside lane perhaps he wouldn't have hit it. YOu never know perhaps some lane hogger vigilante parked it there to catch out a55holes like this.

Eh? This bit doesn't make sense!!
How can he use 65mph and "breathtaking speed" in the same sentance?!
Either he was doing much more than 65mph, or was half asleep.....or more likely, both. And why not try to avoid it?
Agree that middle lane hoggers tend to be completely unaware of what's going on around them, including in front of them!!! Beware!!

A stationary object on an unlit motorway at 65mph will appear bl00dy quickly. Next time you're a passenger on a darkened motorway trip, try looking out of the side window. Stationary objects whip past pretty f__ing quickly at 60+mph.
Not condoning middle lane usage either.

No reflection from the rear reflectors that ALL cars are fitted with to try and prevent such accidents?
Oh, and headlights on 7 series beemers are pretty good.
So 65mph, vehicle suddenly appearing, crash, car disintegrates, airbag inflates..... hmmmmm

If he was doing 65 in a 7 series BM, I doubt it would disintegrate - sure its gonna get the **** knocked out of it, but he's desribing the car literally disintegrating - defo doing more than 65..............

He was playing two keyboards, hence the crash, that man has a lot to answer for musically, ever heard The Myths and Legends of King Arthur, what a steaming pile of old sh*t that was.
Anyway, i have used the middle lane on an empty motorway when trying to find out how fast my T5 really was on the way to Anglessey in the wee small hours, if you are tonking on whilst WATCHING where you are going it gives you two options of where to go if there is a hazzard, the right hand lane only allows you to go left, I can confirm that a Volvo T5 on the motorway at 3am will hit at least 70 miles per hour...... (Cough Cough)

Yes I know someone that as soon as they get to the end of the slip road, move straight over to the middle lane! Reason:- "Well if I need to avoid something in the way I can move to the left or right"
I give up...
I give up...

If the road is deserted and you want to make progress then I would sit in the middle lane too.
The inside lane is too rutted to use half the time, and you'll be only feet away from stationary vehicles on the hard shoulder - in my mind the middle lane is the safest place to be when the road is deserted.
You can only hog a lane if there is approaching traffic behind you as in not deserted Does a tree falling in the woods make a sound? LOL

"Does a tree falling in the woods make a sound?"
Answer: Yes.
Now getting back on topic the moron in question paid for his lane hogging- the point being this sort don't care whether it's empty, full or whatever they just sit in the middle lane daydreaming and crash into stationary objects etc etc.

He would only be hogging the middle lane if someone was behind him and he was getting in their way.
He said it was the early hours of the morning and to many peoples mind it doesn't matter if he's not in anyones way. I would do the same if the road is clear.
I'll bet you don't hog the middle lane as you would be in the fast lane (doing precisely 70mph) as you appear to be so bl00dy perfect.
You are assuming that had it been 9:00am he would have been there also which you don't know as he didn't give details of his general driving style, just that he happened to be there at that particular time.

One question: Did his middle lane hogging policy have a favourable result for him?
Maybe next time he'll try reading his HIGHWAY CODE and get into the appropriate lane- LOL.
