Try to talk, it really helps. I did during all of my presentations and I got good grades.

Seriously though, make eye contact with everyone. Look around the room at the crowd. I normally look just above their heads

Speak clearly, and slowly and try to keep body movement to a minimum. If you forget the "script", just BS

Hope that helps after the poor attempt at a joke

Try and relax before doing it - have a drink before etc

Smile

Practice and make sure you go over your notes and know it inside and out.

For God's sake smile when introduced to do ya thing.

Pace yourself, it is easy to rush, keep your delivery steady and do not rush.

Thank trhem for their time at the end.

Also, keep your hands out of your pockets. Nothin worse than a presenter jangling keys or coins whilst trying to speak.

Is it a presentation where they are likely to ask questions?
If so when i have to do presentations i mention at the start that i'll take questions at the end. (This way you're not interrupted and less likely to forget where you've got to etc..) Might not suit everyone and their type of presentation.

When you look at the audience, do a figure of eight around the room. This will stop you from focusing on one person, very unnerving for that person!!!

Prompt cards are nothing to be ashamed of. Have a set handy in your (No go area ) pockets just in case you dry up. Use postcard size cards and big writing. If you have to produce them, the crowd won't see a sheaf of A4 paper and outwardly moan. Big writing is easy to keep track of in a situation like that.

Here are a few things I have picked up:-

1) Make sure you know what you are talking about - BS can be smelled a mile off. If you know your stuff and believe in what you are saying then that will be obvious to your audience. The delivery doesn;t have to be perfect so long as the information is sound!

2) Prepare any visual aids and have backups e.g. have overheads printed as a backup to powerpoint. I have had a laptop, projector and VCR all fail in one presentation!

3) If addressing a group find a few "friendlies" to glance towards. Every audience has some, maybe someone who is visually agreeing with what you are saying, smiling, nodding etc, and it will give you confidence - don't focus on the ones with their arms crossed shaking their heads, it will only put you off. Don't stare someone out, it make them uncomfortable and prone to ask awkward questions.

4) concentrate on remembering the most important points and use your visual aids such as bullet points to trigger your memory to talk each important point through. That way it doesn't matter if you wander slightly from the script, so long as you get each of your points across along with your reasoning, argument or whatever. There is nothing more frustrating than walking away and remembering you just missed out something crucial!

5) Don't be intimidated by your audience, they are there to listen to you because you are the one with the info, not them!

Thumbs up

LOL at Pete...

Seriously though, I do a lot and usually find that an ice breaker works wonders - an amusing anicdote, or appropriately amusing comment relevant to what you are presenting on. No dumb jokes though.

Depends on the audience - if they don't know the subject then I can usually wing it, alternatively I make sure I know my subject.

If thats not possible, at least be certain of whats in the presentation, even if you don't know what its about.

If in doubt, prepare, prepare, prepare.

D

Oh, and remember to introduce yourself and what you will be talking about. Also note that your audience probablu doesn't want to be there any more than you do..

Any slides? I've fallen asleep during a number of Death by PowerPoint sessions. If so, use the slides as a few pointers but don't just read what's on the screen - I can do that myself thank you very much. Talk around the facts being shown.

I used to do loads of this crap for a big American company who love presentations.
Also did them to sprog squadies going to NI.

Same rules applied to both.
Rehearse, always a must.
Even pace.
Even if you dont feel it, exude confidence.
No hands in pockets
Don't fidget !!
Eye contact with as many people as possible, don't focus on one person.
Always smile, before, during and after.

Best of luck, but you'll fly it
