Question

In the last few months my passive flexibility has been improving quite a lot That said, some of my kicks aren't much higher and if I stand straight and extend one leg outwards I can't hold it much above 90 degrees! But, if I chuck it up in kicking fashion I can get way higher (momentum). Basically my flexibility is good where I'm using gravity or momentum but cr@p when I try to use my own muscles to 'pull' me into a position. This makes good side kicks and roundhouses particularly hard

Anyone got suggestions/exercises on how to improve 'active flexibility'?

Lightbulb

Tie one leg to a tree, the other to your car, have a mate go for a short drive.

How about just working on side kicks and roundhouse kicks? If that's what you want to get better at, just do more. Remember that roundhouse kicks in particular are as much about technique as anything else.
