Just realised what I can do with 175,000 American Airline Miles - so me and my lady are off to Mexico.
Will probably be September - what's the weather like then?
I like the idea of a beach holiday, but not too commercialised.
Any ideas or recommendations for places to stay?

DEFINITELY DEFINITELY DEFINITELY! go and stay at the Adventura Palace Hotel just outside Playa del Carmen!
Just got back - we went for a week and got married there.
All inclusive, no kids, absolutely top 5* accommodation, free minibar (optics on the wall - whoopee!) superb pools, awasome food from 5 fab restaurants, lovely staff, dangerous cocktails. You seriously cannot spend any money there.
Eighteen of us went, everynbody agreed it was the best they'd ever experinced (including the loaded, fussy uncle!)We're now planning to go back in 2005 for a 2nd anniversary/mums 60th birthday bash - 2 weeks next time tho!
Check out www.palaceresorts.com - promise you won't be disappointed. 10 out of 10.

Mexico is brilliant - ok a few too many loud americans but hey you get used to it in about an hour.
Yucutan peninsula is best base to holiday from, wether it's commercial cancun or one of the smaller towns.
Talc powder beach, carribean sea is warm as a bath
Go on excursions to xcaret(sp) and the bit with the mayan pyraminds (we called it chicken pizza as we couldn't spell it but it sounds like it)
sink holes, reef diving - it's all there, including absolute poevrty if you go inland and see old towns.

Continued to surf the net and found some bad reviews of Aventura actually. Then I came across this, which has got loads of great reviews
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Peninsula.html
It's in Cancun, which supposedly is a bit touristy, but may be a good base anyway and the nighlife would be cool.
Not sure which one now????

Went for the Marriott in the end.
I booked flights with AA and the hotel with a bunch of extras (Swimmming with the Dolphins, a Jungle trip and a Dinner Cruise) I got from AA Vacations. Traded in all air miles and the whole lot cost me $700 for the both of us
Well pleased, girlfriend is really happy and v. excited which makes me happy
