GPL Hot Lap Championship - Mexico?
#1
Hi Chaps
Shall we have a go at Mexico this week?
I reckon the rules should be as follows...
Always at least 1 wheel on the track (to stop short cuts)..
No engine swapping, etc. All on the latest patch (can't remember what it is) so you don't have the early cars that could run at rediculous rde heights, etc.
We can all post times throughout the week, but the top three must post their replay at the end of the week.
Sound cool?
We could link up for a race at the end of the week also?
Once we get it going, we could set up a points system and a proper championship?
How sad is this!!
can't wait.
lol

I'm up for it!
I don't know what the early cars are or what the latest patch is as I haven't played it much. Can you let me know?
What about the setting. Are we playing expert mode (the one where I'm usually sitting in a bathtub with no wheels by the second corner), or doesn't it matter.
Any tips on set up for Mexico as it's a bit of a nightmare if I remember correctly
Mmmmmmm..............wonder if I can actually complete a lap this time

Blubs, sounds like you have as much chance of getting a reasonable time as me
I'll give it a quick try after work, but my times are likely to be based on how far I have made it rather than lap time
For Sale
GP Car, one careful owner, resting upside down on divers head, buyer collects from field beside first corner at Mexico.

Robertio,
LOL
You don't mean to tell me you are another one who, fed up of being three laps down on the field after four laps of the race, does a u-turn and drives against the field so they can watch the ensuing carnage on the video replay facility.
tsk tsk

Cool, some GPL competition...
The latest patch takes it up to v1.2, which in particular refines some of the setup quirks that used to exist (you could run the cars really low and stiff).
Check out Alison Hine's site as the place to start when getting back into GPL (

OK, I've run a few laps to get things going...
Best so far 1.51.98 in the Brabham and 1.52.15 in the Lotus...
Both weren't particularly great laps so they should be relatively easy to beat!
Cheers,
Christian

Blubs, the chance would be a fine thing, to complete a lap without rolling the lump of metal with no brakes is regarded as an achievement
Tried it on my works machine, but as soon as I press left on the control pad the machine hangs
Should be able to create a suitably high time tonight, 5 mins seems like a sensible target from memory

Ah, a veritable tyre shredding time in comparison to my miserable 2:31.22 last night.
I only had about ten minutes and the other 7 and a half minutes or so were spend crashing and cursing.
By the way, I used the Ferrari which I believe may have the most frighteningly bad brakes of any machine I have ever driven .

LOL Blubs, I spent about an hour and a half at it to attain that time, and a record of 2 whole laps after an outlap before ending up on my head
Don't use the Ferrari, that is what started with as well, and I think they forgot to fit brakes to them You don't so much brake for corners as try and drift sideways into them in a vain attempt to slow the car down
Simon, what is the idea of picking a track with half Polos stuch on the edge of corners? the number of times I got stuck with one of those things under the middle of the car was second only to the amount of time I spent upside down
Will try to beat 2:15 tonight, but I don't hold out too much hope

Oh great, pick the hardest damn track to start with, why don't you?
Knocked out a 1:54 in the Lotus last night, after practicing in the Brabham first. The power of the Honda down the straight couldn't make up for its weight through the twisty bits.
I'll have to take a look at the Ferrari, I find it's closer to a rally car in terms of its handling, so I'd have thought it would be good sliding around in Mexico.
Could't tell you about the Eagle or BRM, I never drive them!
As for setups, the best place (IMHO) is

Following another 45 minutes of intensive play, I have got my time down to 204.54.
That is a whole lap of not spinning, landing on my head, or getting stuck on half polo mints
First position will be mine !!!!
Simon, come on then put up a time and prove yourself the GP Legends master we all expected, or can you just not beat us?

LOL,
Played for about 15 mins last night and did a 2:13.38 in the Lotus. I'm not changing the set up of the car at all (I don't know what I'm doing!), so maybe I can reduce that time a bit (ha ha).
blubs
ps Did you know that you can skid almost the whole length of the second long straight upside down on your helmet? Now that takes REAL skill

Sorry chaps..
ended up being really busy...
I had a go last night but forgot to post my time...
1:48.58 in the lotus.
Cheers
Simon
PS. I am DEFNITELY no master of GPL. Some of the hotlap guys are just mind blowing. Makes you want to puke!! lol Also, I tend to use a joystick as I can't be bothered with setting a steering wheel up properly, and have never found any decent peddles. I will probably get a full set-up for World Sports Cars though

I want to know what laptimes Mr de-B is turning, so I don't end up getting embarrassed!!
Lsat night's efforts were a mixture of highs & lows. On the upside, I now have a reply of a 1:49:89 in the Lotus. On the downside, the car ran wide on the final left-hander before Peralta putting all four wheels on the grass, so it doesn't count for the purposes of this competition.
As for uploading the replays, where I can put them?
I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't really find Mexico an "enjoyable" circuit to drive. All the corners seem to tighten up half way through them, it's like they designed the circuit backwards!! And as for those giant Polo mints!! Roll on Monza...

Following a further hour of cursing my computer the best I could manage was 2:03.93. The worst part is I can only see me knocking a few seconds off that If I try to go any faster it is only a matter of time before I end up having to return to the pits for a new car.

Hi Chaps
I spent about 2 hours on it last night and couldn't better that time. I got a few 1:48s but none below 1:48.58.
I'll start messing around with set-up a bit more tonight.
I'm also a fool to myself as I can't seem to stop myself from powersliding the bends (throw back from rallying I guess! lol) which is why I'm such a crap circuit driver.
still, it'l make for good replays if I stay in the top 3.
Cheers

Max,
LOL
It's a good trick if you can do it
My helmet is that big I have to fit a visor to stop the sun blinding the eye
blubs
ps 2:07.56 (including a miserable moment when I managed to vault a section of armco and get my rear wheels hooked in it. My speed then carried me round the bend attached to the armco rollercoaster style, pulling about 5g. Just when I thought I would get away with it I came to the end of the armco and was flung out over the grass upside down like a wet rag.)

How did I know you'd beat me Simon?
Another day's efforts resulted in a legal 1:49:44. I think that's the best I'm going to get this week as I won't get another chance to play the game until the weekend.
If you want to see my moment of glory, you can download the reply

Hi Chaps,
Got a 1:51.89 tonight. Not as good as Simon, but I'm more than happy that my Older Brother is better than me at the moment - I mean it's not like he's a good driver in real life or anything anyway !! ;-)
It was in the Lotus, just in case you wanted to know.
C Ya.

OK, a bit of practice has resulted in a replay of a 1.48.62 lap (including running wide at the hairpin - doh!!). I'll try and post it somewhere later...
I also did a 1.48.33, but that included a run along the wall on the outside of the Peralta, so I ignored that one.
I'm consistently in the 1.48/1.49 area now, but having the patience not to overdrive/slide the back out seems to be the limitation to a faster lap. Might have another go later...
Cheers,
Christian

Had a quick go, best I could do was 2.05.97 in the Murusama. I'm not used to the realistic damage mode yet though. Can anybody explain why a loud bang and lots of flames and smoke in the mirrors results in a marked decrease in performance?

Hi Chaps
I thought this was the most appropriate place to offer this first...
If you would like to Beta test the new World Sports Cars BBS, drop me a mail at simon@scoobynet.co.uk

I'll never manage to finish a race in that game. Too hard, and shows I am not very good behind a wheel.
I managed a poor 1:56:46 with the Ferrari, the Lotus is too tricky for me...

I've noticed that the reply count to this thread has increased since the last time I looked in, but I can't see any entries after Luchertola on the 13th...
This is a bit of a test to see if I can see the updates after another post.
Edited to say that I can now see the recent posts!
