Got bit by a Hobo spider in California once cos I was acting the pr1ck with it. It went septic in 12 hours and I it needed a lot of treatment to stop it spreading.

There are quite a few people who have spider bites which never quite heal. In fact i remember seeing one woman on telly a while ago who actually said she'd rather be dead, such was the discomfort that this spider bite caused her, and that was from about five years previously. And you should have seen it - totally innocuous looking thing. Amazing, but scary...

Your mate was extremely lucky then as the banana spider (Also known as the Brazilian Wandering Spider) often proves lethal to those who get bitten by it, Just be thankful we don't have em over here!
Quote:
These large and dangerous true spiders are ranked among the most venomous spiders known to man. In fact, the Brazilian Wandering Spider is the most venomous spider in the New World! In South America, these true spiders are commonly encountered in peoples' homes, supposedly hiding in peoples' shoes, hats, and other clothes

Maybe you mate received a new found love for his own life!

Staying in the States last year I'd made a habit of going on to the porch of the house that I was staying at and leaning against one of the walls occasionally. During my stay we had the Bug guy come round and I saw him looking at said wall that I've been using as a prop. Next thing he pulls out a lock-knife and and stabs at a hole if the wall and out comes a brown-recluse spider.:
He informed me that I was very lucky not to have been bitten and if I had then the pain would have been something else entirely!

Yep, scarey stuff, It's amazing how something so small can be so deadly! I once had a very close encounter with a black widow spider whilst on hols, scared the **** outta me! Was staying at a relatives house and hung a jacket up, few days later put on said jacket and out from the front crawls this black widow, making its way up the outside of my t-shirt heading for my neck, might have ended in a serious state had it not been for my quick thinking uncle who grabbed something and quickly swipped it off me and then stomped on it!
I quite like spiders but the fact it almost came within inches of being able to bite me on the neck (Which could have proved fatal) gave me a real respect for them.
Here is one of the little blighters!

When my bro in law lived in Queensland, one of his lads came and asked him one day to tighten the seat on his pushbike before he road it to school. Rob turned the bike over, and under the seat was a web with Australian Redback, (cousin of Black widow, and equally venomous), complete with about 1000 babies, newly hatched. The kid had been riding the treader to school daily for 2 weeks!!

This is what a bite from this spider can do if untreated.
