The Ministry of Defence (MoD) says a civilian vehicle pulled in front of the transporter, causing it to jack-knife.

Well, the MOD aren't going to say "one of the lads driving dropped off"...
The truth of what happened will, IMHO, never come out of this. If they can't get to the bottom of potters bar, where every party involved is well known to the investigators, then they stand no chance with this.

Just watched the video report on the BBC website. From the eyewitness report it sounds like it was a civilian haulage company transporting the tanks. Whether anything will come out with it not being an MOD vehicle will remain to be seen.
Apparently the trailer broke away from the cab!!

Speculation of any sort doesn't help though - least of all "official" comments from the MOD at this time when relatives are probably yet to be informed. It's too early.
Does anyone know when this is due to be re-opened? The beeb page was updated at 3 and reckons its still closed.

From the local news website...
Surely you can't have a trailer behind a transporter, carrying 20 ton tanks??? And to drive it at a speed that if something pulls out the whole lot breaks away/goes over??
Shouldn't this have had a Police escort anyway?
I really feel for all the families that have lost a someone through this mindless piece of driving.
Mr Brooks said the bulk of the damage was caused by the heavy army vehicles coming off the transporter.
He said: "There were two transporters. One was carrying two of the armoured carriers and had a trailer behind that carrying another two or three.
"That broke away, spun round - jack-knifed if you like - and has gone through the crush barrier.
"The tanks then rolled off. They didn't even look damaged but just crushed everything in their path.
"It was just carnage. That's the right word for it."

My colleague at work who's into lorries and stuff says the tanks should never have come off the trailer in the first place if they were fastened down properly, even in an accident like this!
Its scary stuff when you think it could of been you on that motorway, my condolences go out to the families involved.

Slicey,
Thats correct, load shouls be fastenened down to such an extent that it will not come detached under severe braking, swerving etc.
Crazy thing is why the hell are these things being moved by road. We hear the politicians bleating on about our roads being jammed so why not transport these things by rail.
Chip.

Can HGV's jack knife from the driver dropping off? I thought it needed either a massive swerve or sudden braking.... I suppose a driver may do that if brought suddenly back to reality.
Do MOD HGV's run with TACO's?

Apparently they've arrested some Honda Civic driving old fart for causing death by dangerous driving
How many times a day do we see these sort of incompetents driving on our roads? Surely it's getting toward time for compulsory re-tests at age 60?
