Blackmore is king!
Got into them via Dio->Rainbow->DP. Saw the Mk2 lineup in concert a couple of times (Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice) but only when they briefly re-formed. The 'Made in Japan' concert was on my birthday, but a year before I was born!
Preferred Blackmore when he played the Gibson ES335 rather than the Fender (some of the stuff on the BBC 'In Concert' album is excellent). Not too keen on the first two albums (Shades of DP and Book of Taliesyn) but other than that everything's excellent up to the Joe Lynn Turner stuff
Mind you, I've seen Blackmore being interviewed and he's a tosser

A most excellent album - especially Mr Gillan on "Child in Time". "Highway Star" is also superb.
Dio / Rainbow / Led Zep / Black Sabbath / Ozzy also class. Ooo, I'll have to dig some CD's out for the car now!

Hi Zoog,
I was at the Knebworth, what a mudbath, took us 'till 9:00 in the morning to get the bus out of the mud, then had to walk home from the bus through town looking like I had just crawled out of a swamp.
Good gig though and amazing fireworks at the end.

My fave band. Must admit preferred the original line up of Gillan, Paice, Lord, Blackmore & Glover.
Thought I had all the albums until one of my mates said he had one called the Best of Deep Purple from 1970. Bought it off him.
Tracks include Hey Joe, Help(the Beatles), Lalena(Donovan) and Hush. Unbelievable.
Alas

Actually the "original" line up is on "Shades of Deep Purple" (the one with Hush, Help and Hey Joe on it):
Ritchie Blackmore
Rod Evans
Jon Lord
Ian Paice
Nic Simper
Gillan and Glover replaced Evans and Simper to make the definitive Mk2 lineup. Then Coverdale and Hughes replaced Gillan and Glover to make the Mk3 lineup (some good stuff came out of this, but it's way different from the Mk2 stuff). Then Ritchie Blackmore got the strop and was replaced by Tommy Bolin -- there's some good stuff on the 'Come Taste The Band' album. That was the last of the 'proper' lineups.
Later on they toured with the Mk2 lineup, but with Gillan replaced by Joe Lynn Turner (saw them at what was the Hammersmith Odeon during this phase)
Then they re-did the Mk2 lineup (saw them at the Brixton Academy during this) but again Blackmore got the strop and was replaced by Joe Satriani (of all people) for the Japanese tours. On a more permanent basis Blackmore was then replaced by Steve Morse (saw them at Wembley Arena during this phase). Now I believe Jon Lord has left, so I don't know what they're up to these days. But it's pretty obvious their best days are behind them

Saw them last year at the Hammersmith Apollo (or wotever the hell it's calkled this week ...). Lord, Gillan, Glover, Paice and Steve Morse. Gillan still (at 57 last year) has the most amazing voice ever. And Jon Lord was still with them (he was 60!).
A couple of snippets from Mr Gillan, 'I must be the only 57 year old dad who asks his teenage daughter to TURN THE MUSIC UP when she's playing her stuff' .... And talking about Black Night. 'I talked to Roger (Glover) about BN the other day and asked him if he knew what the words meant. Neither of us have a clue ....'
Crackin' concert!

during the recent Classics of rock TV programme, about In Rock or machine head i think,Gillan admitted that Highway Star was written on a bus.A jounalist asked nthem how they wrote songs. They played about a bit to show him what happens, and in ten minutes possibly their definitive track was finished
and listening to how they climbed into a run down disused hotel and threw their gear into some corridors because Zappa had burnt down their hotel.................then recorded their best album, was just great
