Hifi time again..Classic Marantz CD players

This is great!
I've still got my Marantz CD-52 mk2 as well, linked via QED interconnect to a NAD 3240PE amp, and bi-wired into Tannoy 609's.
All bought at the same time 12-odd years ago , but I've never felt any desparate need to upgrade (certainly wouldn't class myself as a serious audiophile)

Charlie, er.....got all that, i have to admit, although my lounge could ideally be about another three feet wider! Linn Sondek, Lingo, Cirkus, you name it. Oh and don't forget the Ringmat for the turntable, to "make the silences quieter". Oh yes. Oh, and the circular spirit level to make sure it's level to within a nanometer. Oh, and the dedicated earth circuit, with earth spike in the garden. Oh, and the stylus calibration kit. Oh, and the vinyl cleaning solutions. Ahem.
Must be honest though, never bought more than one version of a vinyl disc! Now that *would* be silly....!!

Luke,
Recently bought a CD63 MK2 SE K1 Signature off Ebay and a PM66 SE K1 Signature as well - about £150 each, both mint condition and sounding excellent. Both these items were £500'ish new. Decided to go this route rather than buying new kit for same price.

I still have my CD52 mk 2 SE ... after 10 years it's not so sharp but mated to a Marantz amp and B&W speakers it's still adequate for my needs!
Anyone know an easy way of freshening up the sound - do CD cleaners work?

Ravster, yep CD cleaners are worth using.
As a gimmick man, though, there are also a few other things to try. Russ Andrews Accesories do Relees and Reveal, basically a cleaner and an anti-static agent. Their prices are high, but the customer service is excellent and they do deliver next day.
But the thing i think that works best, though not totally sure where to get it from now, or indeed if it's still made, is the Denon DeMagic disc. An awful sound while it's playing, but it certainly does the job. It's a de-magnetiser.
And lastly, rip out the interconnects and clean them. ProGold is good if you can afford it, or a silver jewellery cleaner liquid works well too.

Ravster -- it's worth taking the cover off and having a gentle dust around, with one of those squeezy air blowers that photographers use for cleaning prints & negs. Also worth cleaning the lens carefully with a cotton bud and tape head cleaner.
As mentioned, interconnect sockets benefit from a clean up, again, a cotton bud & tape head cleaner leaves them clean and free of deposits etc.
You could clean the pins of the mains plug with metal polish too, but that's getting into the "hifi nutter" zone
The Philips bitstream chips used in the Marantz players are top, my bro-in-law's CD63SE still sounds great.

TelBoy and brickboy (are you related?!),
Cheers for the tips, will give them a go (well, maybe except the plug cleaning).
Just thought, after 10 years, maybe it's my ears that are going fuzzy!

I still use my Marantz CD52 MkII, with an Arcam Alpha 3 amp and Royd A7II speakers - all bought together in 1992. I haven't listened to any current hi-fi stuff so I've no idea how it compares - no doubt things have moved on.
The amp crackles when you adjust the volume now, and the volumes 'jumps' about a bit when you do this. It's not a smooth change in volume. I presume the **** has been impregnated with dust - any ideas how to remedy this?

last year i bought a technics HiFi for 900 so that i could hook it up to my Decks for ultimo sound quality in my shed, 900 seems alot of cash but i'm tellin ya this hifi was worth it. at a bbq at my friends house we hooked up the decks outside for a full blast party and when the bass kicked in from a song by Robbie Rivera - Funk-A-Tron the ground literally shook.
Plus it has a 5 disco dvd changer init (too bad i only got one dvd lol

Butkus - contact cleaner. ProGold is the best, but De-Oxit works ok too. If you don't want to get involved with hi-fi suppliers, any electrical accessory shop will sell you some sort of contact cleaner. But do try and get ProGold, it's seriously good.
As for polishing mains plugs - only a *complete* nutter would do that. I mean, you'd never catch me doing anything like that, oh no.

Nope, it's on the list. Supposed to do something to the crystal structure within the cd, so the laser can read the information more clearly. Definitely marginal, but also in the "why not" category if you don't share a freezer with anyone and can sneak them in there at midnight when nodoby's likely to see you doing it...

Telboy, I am afraid poncing about with cds and green felt-tips is decidedly at the "toddler" stage of the developing hi-fi nutter. To progress you need to relegate the little silver discs to the back of your collection and get out the big black discs. This is not as easy as it sounds. In order to replay these discs at anythiong like the necessary level of quality you will need:
i) a divorce
ii) a large, detached house
iii) a room at least 20"x12" with a solid (not suspended) floor. You may find it advantageous to demolish your existing house and build another one, incorporating a large listening room designed around "perfect ratio" dimensions.
iv)a power supply for your phono stage
v) a phono stage
vi) a pre-amplifier (separate power supply an advantage)
vii) a power amplifier
viii) a power supply for your turntable
iix) a turntable
ix) a cartridge
x) some speakers
if any of the above items set you back less than a grand, go back and start again - you ain't trying hard enough.
You will then need to exhaustively research the sound quality of various different pressing and labels of the same record. You will then need to eaxhaustively trawl through lists until you own at least three different pressings of each of your favorite record. Now, at last, you can "impress" your friends by attempting to demonstrate how one has more bass weight than the other, the soundstage is wider etc etc etc.
