Theoretical question... whats the quickest thing round a track..?
#1
I reckon the fastest thing anywhere is my wife. As soon as I get into bed on a night she comes out with some "innocent" comment like "I feel crap" or "I'm tired" etc to prevent me even THINKING about begging for a quick wriggle..
Faster than a thought..
How fast is THAT!
Dan - no idea

Was thinking about this today.. Lets just use silverstone as an example of the track.
Criteria:
The vehicle must ride on the track
It must have an engine
either 2 or 4 wheels
What would be the fastest thing around the track an F1 car..?? a GP 500cc bike..???? what..??
Opinions welcome..

Well, if you cheated, and had wheels on the track, but created a nice rail to go all the way round the track that the vehicle sat on but with wheels still touching the track......you could just use some very fast rocket..... bit like a greyhound rabbit on steroids

F1 car being allowed to run using all the technology that's been banned on them to make them slower over the last fifty years. Imagine a car with those fifty years restored!
1) Engine size back up to 3.5 litres (currently 3.0)
2) Supercharged (ie 2,000+ horsepower, currently banned, so only 850)
3) Active suspension
4) Every electronic driver aid imaginable
5) No minimum weight (currently set at a lardy 600kg)
6) Altering ride height
7) Biiiig wide slicks
8) No limit on wheel number (the old 6 wheel Tyrrels went well)
9) All wheel drive
10) Masses of wing that are able to move under electronic control (currently they aren't allowed to)
11) CVT gearbox (also currently banned)
And my favourite....
12) An enormous central fan sucking the car down onto the road (as appeared in the 70' or 80's before being very quickly banned?)

A Scaletrix car
Indy cars are faster than F1 cars, but it would be interesting to see which is actually quickest side by side
afaik they run turbos on indy cars, and can easily hit 220 mph, and they are pretty good on the street circuits

I would have to disagree about the Indy car faster than a Formula 1 car comment. They might have a faster top end speed but thats usually down to gearing. IMHO an F1 car is faster under acceleration and would be faster around the majority of circuits.

Remember an Indy car runs on Methanol (IIRC) where the F1 car has to run on a petrol based fuel.
This makes it a lot more powerfull but the Indy cars dont have a semi manual gearbox like an F1 car, they still have a gearlever, so this evens things out a little.
The technology still in use in an F1 car still outways whats used in an Indy car.
In a straight line the Indy car will have a better top speed but on a track the F1 car will have the overall edge.

F1 and Cart do share one circuit, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, in Montreal, Canada.
Lap times
Cart - Cristiano da Matta (2002) - 1:18.959
F1 - J-P. Montoya (2002) - 1:15.960
The only circuits a Cart would be fastert on is a super speedway.

A lot of the Indy cars are built in the UK. They do a lot of testing at Silverstone. I remember a telly program once,If you put a Indy car in a F1 race at Silverstone, it wouldn't meet the 107% qualifying time.
They have a manual gearbox, cast iron brakes, they're bigger, heavier etc. I can't remember all the details, I think they're geared for a higher top speed though.

Well................they would be quickest on gravel
There was a story once that a group B rally car would have qualified 4th in the Portugese GP it was that fast around the track.
Never seen any evidence to back it up though.

It would need to be remote controlled. With big slicks, active aerodynamics, the big fan sucking things down etc, you'd probably be generating enough cornering g's that the driver would pass out.
The crazy rallycross cars might beat the F1 cars off the line in a drag race, but I doubt they could compare under breaking or cornering?

Fastest thing I've seen round a track was a fluffy rabbit with 6 greyhounds tearing its tail off!!
Certainly faster that you kiddies with your 'make-believe' 300BHP's!!

davyboy,
in the 1986 season Henri Toivonen made two laps around the Estoril circuit, during a stage of the Portuguese rally, the fastest of which, in 1 minute and 18,1 seconds, would have qualified him in the sixth position of the F1 Grand Prix that same season. Ayrton Senna had the Pole Position in the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix in 1 minute and 16,7 seconds...Toivonen was using the Lancia Delta S4
so there you go....keep all these rally boys happy!
