I'm afraid it's not something that I've been interested in, so I don't have any "magical" websites. A few years ago I was wandering down Tottenham court road and they used to sell these high powered walkie talkies for "export only".
Having just discussed it with a friend of mine, you can get a handset for about $60 (don't know about the UK) that will have a power output of 4W and a distance of 4 or 5 miles.
Steve.

XT - I have an ES220 handheld CB with adjustable power output of 1-4Watts and it is great. Has a range of about 4 miles around town but in open areas much more - i.e. NI to Scotland.
I bought it about...oh my god...maybe 7 years ago! LED display, 40 channels etc. Who knows what you can buy these days!

4W ?? That's pretty powerful
Basically, the model i'm interested is a Maycom one.
I found an article on the net on how to make it work on more frequencies.
The best price i've found it for is 80 quid + posting(8 quid) in the UK.
The model is this Maycom EM-27

I need a pair because i'll be off to Greece in 20 days with a mate of mine, and we'll buy a pair to talk during the trip
Do you lot reckon that this will be ok? I don't think the wo car will be more than 3-4 miles apart from each other.

4w is nothing, however 4w is the legal limit.. You do also need a licence..
If you get a normal CB, something such as the old Stalker (sp) super high, super low, etc etc..
Oh, I used to run 400w on my CB
I then moved on and passed my licence to become a radio amateur and could run 400w legally..
Did run DTMF Coded Squelch though, which isnt legal
Then mobile phones and email took off and I resulted in ringing my friends..

its just that the aerials are ****..
Its down to the gain on the aerial..

Mr Wallis I have sitting in my loft a small Kenwood TL-922A FT757GX2,FC757 and psu, mobile mounts etc and that's from my unlicence days no change now then
When I used to live in the old house It was one of the highest villages in Berks, Hants & Oxon god I used to get complaints from all over the place on 11mtrs
It was well known in berks that they used to say about my setup then "That's not a CB That's a radio station "
Oh the days of winding them so so much
Oh and the kit for the roof of the house was quite good as well
3 eleiment beam, Avanti moonraker 4The Neighbours didn't like this one
Sigma 4 orignal not a naff copy and many more sat around in the loft and garage IIRC I Have in my colection of bits about 25 different mobile ants and 1 of those is a DV27 you name it and it could be in me loft the best laugh was having 2 co-phased 9ft wips on the back of my old Fiat 131 sport also with about 10 other different radios up there as well and don't get me on the subject of bleeps

Just a few quick thoughts,
have a look at www.wsplc.com for just about any type of radio equipment you could want
I've had one of the Maycom units, it malfunctioned within a few days of me getting it (not from the above, I hasten to add), other than that it was a fairly good little unit. I then got an Albrecht AE-485 which was really good, a little funny to work with since the bands are a bit skewed, but it did cover a reasonable part of the 11 / 10 meter bands
Finally, I took the plunge and bought a Yeasu FT-100D, which just "feels" right, does what it says on the tin etc LOL. It's also possible to open up the Rx and Tx bands with a little mod, gives pretty much uninterrupted Rx from near DC to just shy of 1GHz if memory serves Tx is a little bit more picky, but then that't no real surprise since your SWR will be all over the shop, and you'de need one hell of an ATU to compensate for that kind of range!
Loads more useful info on that type of stuff at www.mods.dk, just don't use the radio in parts of the spectrum you shouldn't...
Cheers,
Pat.

XT,
glad I could help
Waters & Stanton are one of the most repsected radio equipment suppliers around. You'de be lucky to find a radio Ham that hasn't heard of them. Luckily for me they're just a few miles down the road, so I can just pop in if I need anything, they're always courteous, helpful and won't try to sell you something you don't need. Big thumbs up from me at least
Cheers,
Pat.

You could always take a look at Ebay, surprising what they have in the way of radio equipment.
I am a licensed amateur as well and if the conditions are right it is possible to contact Australia or New Zealand on 4 watts. I and some of my friends have done that a few times.

4w austrailia (sp) pah... what frequency? morse?
I only ever bothered with 70cm's 2m and 6m.. (probably cos thats what I was licenced for..)
70cms being the favorite as some friends were 'novices'
Still have my cb, and still have the amateur band aerials up on the roof on the rotator..
Ive got a 2m Directional of some sort vertically polarised at the moment and a dual band.. fibreglass ant. about 3m long iirc..
brings back memorys of spending lots of money on coax.. and silly connectors..
How much I've forgotten
I have a Yaesu FT51R expanded to military spec.. as pat says about 120mhz -> 900mhz...
It Will attempt to transmit everywhere...

There's a shop called Truck King in Garston/North Watford that stocks a wide range. Don't know a web address but shouldn't be hard to find.

Wow CB,
brings back some memories, used to be great fun back in the day, remember using it to death when the old 27Mhz FM became legal was about 13 at the time and used it constantly, is it pretty much same as? Had some friends that went into it in a big way, sidebanders and linear amps and that, can you still get all that stuff?

we use motorolas, take them off snow boarding handfree kit available too - dead handy also when in convoy with other cars - cheapest place is the USA, however they dont work with radios bought in the UK
