One of ours disappeared for 6 days a couple of years ago - we were very worried (particularly as we lived near a busy road). She turned up eventually, though, a bit thinner and extremely angry. We reckoned she got shut in a neighbour's garage or shed.
Our others regularly wander off for 24 hours.
Give it until tomorrow, and if there's still no sign ask the neighbours if they can check their sheds/garages.

Ours went missing for about 3 or 4 weeks once, starangeley enough she looked just like yours. After we had given up all hope of her coming back, we got a phone call from someone about 1/4 of a mile away - they had found her in the garage. God knows what she eat and drank - she did look a bit emaciated when we got her back though.
Good luck,
Mike.

Females will stay close to home while the males will wander away for days or sometimes weeks at a time. I'm not sure about neutered cats though.
Cat's are very curious and will explore everything they see. I had a cat a few years ago that went missing because he climbed up into the engine bay of my next door neighbour's car. He only discovered it when he arrived at work.
Is it a friendly cat? Maybe someone has taken him in.
Does he have a collar with your name and address attached?
What's the traffic like, does he have good road sense?
Anyway, hope you find him, it's a really bad feeling when a pet goes missing and you don't know why.
-------------
Edited to say I obviously took too long to type the above. I'm glad he's back. He was obviously having a good time, totally oblivious to your concern for him.

Good news!! My wife is a vet nurse and has heard a few mad stories, once a cat came back to its owners after 3years away! The had completely given up on it, no surprise!!
My advice to all cat owners would be to get your cats micro chipped. It's a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is injected into the cat. You can't see it and the cat can't feel it.
If the cat is taken to a vets / animal shelter it is scanned and the owner information can be retreived.
Most vets supply this service and is relatively cheap.

Eh! WTF? My first post at top has gone????????
It was this :
Our 11 month old cat (a wee cutey) did not come home last night. He has been allowed out for last 8 months or so, yet has ALWAYS come home before midnight and stayed in all night. Last night he did not. :-(
Cat flap set so he can come in but not go out again.....to trap him when/if he does return.
He has been neutered, and have put a few posters up around the area in case he's locked in someone's garage/shed or something.
What are other people's experiences? How long have theirs been AWOL?
It will break my girlfriend's heart if he does not return soon as he was found in a plastic bag in a river when a kitten (before we got him), then got a horrible fever which nearly finished him off 6 months ago, and so he is a poor wee soul.
