would the pilot have been prosecuted?

just read this
A copper was up on the Yorkshire moors with his Radar gun, targeting cars coming over the Brow of a hill and down a sharp drop. (As they do) he had was just clocking a car, when a Tornado, (The Jet fighter type, not the wind) came over the crest at nought feet, (As they Do). The Copper got a fix, on the jet at 500MPH or so, BUT the Jets Radar protection kicked in and locked a HAARM, missile on him. Unfortunatly the pilot (Or Nav) canceled it. Shame
eh? if a jet can have a laser jammer why can't a car?

'fraid so.
Tornado carries ALARM not HARM
The missiles are £250k a pop and are not carried on training flights - they use inert rounds to simulate the load instead.
The RWR would not have been triggered by something of that power - if it were then the nav would spend his whole time cancelling threat indications for pelican crossings, supermarket doors, gatsos and so on.
I do know of a true story, though, of a journalist from a certain bike magazine zapping an (un-named, here anyway) military aeroplane with a radar gun. The pilot obviously did get some sort of warning because he went active for a half second or so and jammed the signal.
I saw the circuits inside a few minutes afterwards. Completely fried. I also spoke to a friend who was an air traffic controller in the same area (well, within 500 miles) who says that they got a massive burst of jamming (in fact the screens went white for a 5 degree segment) at around that time...

ALARM is a cool missile -- far better than HARM. AFAIK HARMs don't lurk.

its not an urban myth, its on the internet!
oh,yeah,see what you mean
but surely if it is a myth,in would end with the copper jumping out of the way of the missile and living happily ever after?
