Got a NIP in the post yesterday, I've been done for 38 in a 30 in Llangollen last Saturday.

Fair cop I guess, although I'm gutted as I didn't see a camera/copper/unmarked car and don't know how I was done. Anyone know what was operating in that area last weekend? I thought I was pretty good at paying attention (first time caught in 14 yrs driving) so a lesson learnt there for me. Also thought I was driving carefully and at least pretty close to the limit (if not actually under) in the built up bits. Oh well.

Anyway, I reckon if I'd been going 3mph slower I would have got away with it - is that true? Anyone been done going slower than 38?

yep my mum told me someone she knows got stopped and done by the police for doing 36mph in a 30

I wonder how low they go during "zero tolerence" campaigns? I reckon about 33mph (30 + 10% margin for error)?

36mph is the lowest you will ever see - 30 + 10% + 3mph = 36

Therefore motorway it is 70 + 10% + 3mph = 80

36 - Ouch. The laws the law though, I can't complain about being done (30 makes sense, it's 70 limits on M-ways that I don't agree with!) I'm just a bit gutted I let myself be caught.

it really dephends on the officer, i got let off doing 36 in a 30 zone, but my m8 got done at exactly the same speed on the same stretch of road.

I know the road is for everyone, and speeding is against the law, full stop. But it p155es me off the amount of police time/effort/money/manpower that is ploughed into taxing the battered and bewildered motorist. I wonder what the manpower ratio is compared to investigating burglary, or car theft. OK, so there is only a slight chance of these crimes killing or maming, but tell that to some poor sap whose just had his TV and DVD loaded into the back of his own car and will never see them again when he's just been told it'll be three days before a SOCO comes, if ever, here's your crime number now go call your insurance company, bye.
3500 are killed on the roads each year, only 5% of which the Met attribute directly to speed, that's 175. Of the rest how many are unprotected motorcyclists, who don't get fined £30 for not wearing a seatbelt. How many are pedestrians crossing 50yds from a zebra because that 50yds is too far. How many are cyclists with no crumple zones or airbags. How many are children with no formal training or qualifications entitling them to use the highway.
The law is full of hypocrisy and has as much to do with justice as Tory bLIAR has to do with cream cakes. Traffic law is simply highway robbery.
If you want to come down hard on something dangerous, smoking kills 250000 a year in this country alone. So what wonderful gizmos shall we give the police to identify smokers, cameras, helicopters, high speed pursuit vehicles, fire extinguishers.
Ooh, but then again, that's legal, because it's taxed, a bit like car ownership.

the police out of good grace give you 10% , they can charge you with doing 31mph in a 30mph zone if they so wish , the above was allowed in the 1960's for speedo error , but in 1989 it was decided that the speedo's were a lot more acurate than in the 50's
the police have the discretion as to when to issue a ticket ,if you ticket and fine every body who goes over the speed limit it will be counter productive as the whole country would drive around looking at the speedo and not the road.
that is why if the weather is good and you are not being a loon most forces give you smacked legs for minor errors of judgement when it comes to speed.(exception to the rule is wales)

in answer to the title of the thread i have been issued a court summoms for doing 74mph on the M4 two months ago and i am waiting for a court date.

an ex girlfriend was issued with a fixed pen ticket for 33mph when leaving my village which is a 30mph zone.(cheshire police)

A friend was done for 35 in a 30 zone- nr a school mind you so he should have been doing more like 25 anyway.

Officially its speed +\- 10% and 2mph so really 35mph in a 30 limit is borderline, thats what they work to down here. But its just a revenue making scheme, I had £30,000 of work stuff pinch from my car a few years back (some of it dangerous) and it took 8 calls to the Police station before anyone came out. No money in it for them tho

I think we should all band together and spend a month driving everywhere at 10 mph. See how pissed off they get about that. No speeding fines and productivity down the pan.

I was done by a camera on the M25 for doing 57mph in a 50 limit

It was 7.15 in the morning in nose to tail traffic - So how I was done defeats me!

I think the reason we get hammered Corradoboy is that is is dead easy to convict motorists and process their speeding claims with the minimum of paperwork etc. I understand your feelings completely, especially when they are always too busy to do anything about minor theft and vandalism. I am really unimpressed to see that local police stations close down in the evening and rely on a couple of police in a panda car to supervise an enormous area. What chance have they got to get to the scene quickly and if an emergency to do anything significant without calling up back-up which takes yet more time to arrive. It was also interesting to see that our council tax went up by 18% and the next thing was a council meeting with the intention of doubling councillors expenses! At least some honest councillors did not vote it all in.

I read somewhere that the Road Traffic Act now requires speedos to be within 10% as far as overreading is concerned but they may not underread at all. So theoretically you can legally be "done" for anything over the speed limit but you have to hope that the local police will allow a margin to allow for accidental error.

Just a bit of info for you from a traffic cop.
Gatso does not flash until 34mph.
Handheld radar cops dont work Bank holidays.

I got pulled over for doing ?31 in a 30 - crawling past a police van on a dual carriageway.

He was peeved, as he could look down from his van onto the dashboard of my convertible Dutton kit car, and see that the speedo read 0 - the cable had snapped and I couldn't be bothered to replace it as I thought no-one would ever find out, as they'd only see it when the car was stationary.

Got shouted at, but didn't get a ticket.

Oh yeah - his argument was "it is quite obvious that a vehicle of the law is travelling at the speed limit, therefore by overtaking him you are breaking the speed limit." I kept that in mind as I blasted past the striped Metro doing 45 in a 60 zone a couple of weeks later

I got pulled over on the M69 about 5 years ago for doing 95mph in a Celica GT! It was about 9pm on a Saturday night and anyone who knows the M69 will know it's empty at the best of times let alone at this time of night. But i was driving 'sensibly', indicating and pulling out well before the few cars i did overtake and then the blues went on and i thought boll*cks.
Having been done three times for speeding previously in my teens probably more down to my attitude with the copper, i'd read somewhere that they don't like to get of their ***** so it helps if you get out of your car and go over to them, are polite, and are honest about your speed as it shows you are aware and alert.

So i gave it go and he complimented me on my driving style saying driving at that speed in those circumstances was obviously well within mine and the cars capabilities and just asked me to produce my documents!!!

Talk about common sense prevailing and my respect for them going from zero to,well atleast one!

I don't agree with the over zealous and sneaky tactics used by the Police to ramp up the number of tickets, but if the cars speed was measured at 36 then the cars speedo is going to be pointing close to 40 which is not not even close to the 30 speed limit.
